				Do you mean tertiaries or high/middle schools?
 
For tertiaries - Yes in the lead up to and following public holidays.
 
This is to open up clear periods which allow students to go home.
 
I doubt that this happens for high schools as they are mainly non-residential as far as I know.

Yes, they can. Extra classes. Extra homework. Saturdays are not necessarily days off...especially as students get closer to the gaokao.
