Do you keep the original on you or travel with a notarized copy?

Neither. I have scanned copies of my certificate and reference letter from the course director. This has always served me well enough for EFL jobs in China and the UK. Other countries and experiences may of course vary.

Scans of all letters, diplomas, documents. Never a problem anywhere (Mexico, China, India, United States......).

If you want, the UK will appostille a notarised copy of a CELTA certificate (some countries won't appostille copies). You'd probably have to go through a UK embassy if you aren't UK based, as it would need to be a UK registered notary.

Why would it need to be UK registered notary? A notary in Canada who views the original document would be able to attest to, having seen the original.

Ask for advice and then argue once said advice has been given.

Just take the original, you won't be stabbed/shot/robbed as soon as you set foot outside the airport... Unless you are going to the USA Twisted Evil

Dear Prof Gringo,

". . . you won't be stabbed/shot/robbed as soon as you set foot outside the airport... Unless you are going to the USA."

Good news - now you don't even have to wait until you set foot outside the airport:

"LAX shooting: 1 killed, gunman caught, thousands of travelers delayed (+video) November 1, 2013
LAX shooting on Friday left one TSA agent dead and several others wounded, before police shot the attacker. The gunman at Los Angeles Airport apparently acted alone. The incident scrambled flight schedules around the country."

Regards.
John

Because all CELTA certificates are issued by Cambridge in the UK. So only the UK can apostille them (at least no other country ought to, if anyone knows of another country that will, I'd be interested to hear). The UK can only apostille documents notarised by a UK notary, with a few exceptions through certain consulates/embassies. If you want to try it with a Canadian notary, feel free.

I was asking for opinions on what others do. I wasn't 'arguing', I simply expressed my own opinion to a comment that was made.

Sure. How long ago did you get that "CELTA"?

The Bitish Council can validate the certificate if you're abroad. It would then need to go to the British Embassy who validate that the BC stamp is genuine! finally to the relevant Ministry in whichever country you find yourself. There will be a fee at each stage....

It's a big ripoff!
