|
|
I am on a hunt, but I need help.
I am looking for a used power cord and a used monitor cable (to connect an external monitor to my laptop). The monitor cable had blue ends with 15 pins.
Two days ago, I picked up a LCD monitor from a recycle shop, but it does not have the cables. I was assured that the monitor works though.
Don Kihote sells the monitor cable (new), but at the ridiculous price of 2,500 yen.
This country must have a zillion used cables and power cords, but I don`t know where to get one.
Help please! |

Have you tried a 100y store? I've picked up every cable I've needed there, although they are sometimes 300y instead of 100y. |

My tiny Seria that's built into a grocery store had ethernet patch cable links, so if you head to one of the bigger stand alone ones, you might find what you need.
You can also try K's denki. They have sales and the merchandise isn't closeout like Donki. The one in my town even cuts wire to your size. |

the 'ridiculous' price of 2,500 yen
seems salaries really have gone down in japan
how many months then will it take to save up for all of that
good luck with your years of endeavour in saving £15/$25 |

2,500 Yen is overpriced. I recently bought an old flatscreen monitor with cable for 3,000 yen. I reckon Black_Beer_Man will end up paying rather less than 500 Yen if he shops around.
If you're happy to throw away 2000 Yen without a murmur, your salary won't go far. |

I know about mark-ups on wires and electronic accesories because back home, I worked at Radio Shack to fill in the dead times when my language school had no students.
The mark-up is something like 900% or more. I remember seeing Radio Shack`s books on nickle cadium cordless phone batteries and they paid their supplier something like $1.50 each and then turned around and sold them for $19.95.
Electronic shops make most of their profits off parts and accesories. The mark up on finished products is much lower because the different stores compete on these.
So, you should NEVER buy your electronic parts anywhere but 100 yen shops or second hand (unless your company is paying).
If I cannot find my wires from a recycle shop, I will order them from China through Ebay. This is a good option, but takes time for delivery. Shipping is often free from China. |

Yes, the mark up is high, but do you really want a used cable? I would also try shops in Akihabara as they will also let you test the cable (assuming you bring your monitor with you) before you pay for it. |

Used is fine. They're just wires. I would only invest in very high quality new wires with gold tips if I were buying them for an expensive audio or video system.
In my case, it's just to display the internet from my laptop.
Actually, I found and bought my wires yesterday in another recycle shop for 840 yen.
The PC power cord was 315 yen and looks almost new.
The 15 pin male cable to connect the external screen to my laptop was 525 yen and was even new in the box.
Often recycle shops sell new stuff or hardly used stuff that people decided that they didn't need. They're worth a look.
But, if you're in a hurry, it's worth it to buy new.
I like buying things at recycle shops, not only for the deals, but for the fact that I am rescuing something that the shop might put in the trash later if they don't sell it within a certain period. Plus if I buy a new one, Bic Camera will order another one to replace its stock from China and China will make more pollution. |

But I am talking about wires that sometimes have been twisted up a fair bit by the previous owners, so gold tips notwithstanding, they may not last long.
As to 'recycling', I think that is very environmentally noble. Personally, I don't worry about the Chinese making money, as the makers, irregardless of origin, will charge more than what the cables should realistically be priced for. |
