With the release of the details of the visit of the US Interior Sect. to Mexico in July and the fact that the spy scandal was not on the agenda, and no press conference took place, it seems Mexico, unlike many other countries, is not going to press the US about its spying.
The logical conclusion is that the US spooks were able to get their hands on lots of dirt to use to blackmail the Mexican govt into submission. One would think the people of Mexico would be up in arms. I suppose Televisa and TVAzteca won't make much mention of the facts, and things will go on as usual. It will be interesting to see if the Mexican govt has to resort to some fabricated crisis to help wash this latest scandal out of people's minds. Echoes of the swine flu swindle perhaps?? |

Why wouldn't we think that the Mexican government itself isn't in on the spying, on itself, other countries, and economic competitors?
Every country spies - on friends and enemies. What you see on Televisa and TV Azteca is designed for people who watch tv. Soap opera. |

But the whole point is, now that they have been caught, do we just go on with this sort of thing? If the fact that spying is illegal but they do it anyhow, does that mean we should legalize it?
In terms of my personal life, if I found out that my neighbour had installed microphones and cameras in my house and was recording my actions, I would be inclined to take a different attitude with that neighbour afterwards. Saying that all the neighbours do that would not make me feel better.
I don't watch Televisa nor TVAzteca, I don't have the stomach for that kind of stuff. I know there is a telenovela presidency, but the fact that economic spying is being considered "acceptable" implies that all forms of law and international agreements are simply formalities that can be disregarded by the powerful and influential.
Wouldn't it be better to start somewhere in saying that public life should have some minimal standard of decency as opposed to do turning one's back on politics, which is what the majority of people seem to do, with the encouragement of "anti-government" governments sponsored by those who would rather that the economic elites ruled directly without interference by the "proles"? |
