Januray 1st falls on a Wednesday.

Will the holiday/day off simply be given on Wednesday without any other days off that we would later have to make up?
or
Will Monday, December 30th and Tuesday, December 31st be days off and we will have to make up that Monday and Tuesday elsewhere?
or
Will Thursday, Janury 2nd and Friday, January 3rd be days off and we will have to make up that Thursday and Friday elsewhere?

Ask your employer. Not only will they have first-hand knowledge of what their employees will receive, but they are your employer. The pre-holiday dated noted by the government is the 1st - 3rd; but it ha snot been officially announced as of yet. Either way, only YOUR employer knows when the make-up days are (as must be done per law).

Ask your students.
If you ask the FAO, it is likely that they will say they don't know.
They do know, but it would be seriously out of line to announce anything before the college honcho does.
Students will be booking travel now so they have decided, or have worked out from previous years, what will happen.
Once you have it sussed, ask the FAO if your scenario is the likely situation.

Hard to know for this year, since for most of us the semester should end around the 7th or 8th of January. The smart thing to do would be to just take the 1st off and keep the schedule as is, not messing too badly with the run up to the final exam period. Alas the "smart thing" and what actually happens in this universities don't often go hand in hand.
In any case still being November I'd say it's as yet too early to know what's going to happen. The final decision will still require the powers that be to have at *least* another 15 or 20 very important meetings, expensive dinners and trips to the whorehouse to make up their mind. Check back in a couple of weeks.

Yeah it is probably a bit early.
But no harm in broaching the subject with students.
Freshers probably won't know too much, but sophomores may well.

It's good to be the King!

Ah, life at the top here in Our China. Funny (sometimes haha, sometimes not so much) how these decisions don't get announced until the last minute.

"Ssh! Secret! Secret! Must keep it under wraps!"

What's the big secret? Is it some weird power trip? "I control the information; therefore, I control the power!"

It just as well could be the latter: hugely disorganized and haven't a clue, hence, last-minute decisions made haphazardly.

Ah well, I just keep on rollin' with the punches here in Our China.

I just work everyday anyway. The students are always surprised by my answer to their question: "Mr. fat_chris, what are you doing on Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc?"

"Workin'! Teachin' you a class!"

Shocked

Haha! They always want me to cancel class. Nope.

All right. Enough rambling from me for now.

Warm regards,
fat_chris

It's a straight one day off affair.

At the moment it seems January 1, 2, and 3 will be days off. I surely can't speak for any other school, but I assume we will have to work one or two days on the previous weekend or on the weekend after to "make up" for the generosity Rolling Eyes of getting this 3 day "gift" Rolling Eyes .

For those working at joint-venture universities in China there are and will continue to be exceptions to certain cultural dispensations, e.g. no making up of classes missed on any Chinese or Western holidays and a two-week Christmas break that includes three paid holidays and seven paid leave days for a total holiday of 17 days. I apologize in advance for gloating but the point is to give another point of view, i.e. there are other options and opportunities for teachers aside from standard university gigs run by Chinese iron rule. Just a reminder that there's always a flip side of the coin and perhaps something for some to aspire to as from what I'm being told there are dozens of universities in England, Australia, Canada and America currently applying for joint-university licenses in the PRC.

I'll be happy to provide the website of my current university to anyone via private message (I've already done this for several inquiring minds) and will of course be even more happy to do so during this holiday season.

I work for a franchised program but would not give up the Chinese holiday schedule, more than 45 days spring festival....a long period for a few working holidays that pale in comparison due to the false ring of celebrating a special date that really doesn't exist Asia except for those plastic reminders of joyful events found back on the block.

this will be interesting.

according to our school schedule, the first week of january is for tests.
(week 19 is for final exams). there will be a 3-day new year's holiday,
probably with makeup on the prior weekend. i don't expect to get the
scheduling notice until the week before.

admin has no problem with us ft's arranging our own makeup schedule.
i've always sent an email memo to the fao letting her know my plan.
same this year. when the time comes, i'll just let the affected classes
decide if they want their tests the week before or on the scheduled
makeup day. may wind up giving the final on christmas day, even though
ft's get the day off per contract.

regardless, i'm flying out january 8 for my well-deserved, paid 5-week
vacation in southeast asia.

Chou
Small detail: Are you paid in advance for Spring Break or if pay is available on normal date, is it deposited in a bank account that can be accessed via a cash machine.
This came up last year on Dave's and in a previous year, our teachers were told pay would go into bank accounts but wasn't deposited.
Bit unsettling if you're down in Hainan and home base is in Qingdao.

There should not be a make up day for Jan 1 as it is a national holiday. My school gives us off Dec 21 to Jan 2. Some of us are taking a few extra days before or after

we usually get our salary by direct deposit by the 15th of
the month. per contract, spring break is different. we get
half of one month's pay the month before, and the
remainder at the end of the contract. seems to be a
leftover from some copy-n-paste contract writing at one
time. fao thinks its to ensure ft's will come back after the
break. i asked her if she believed that if the foreign teacher
really wants to bail, he'll reconsider over a few thousand
rmb. she agreed. it could also be because the finance
guys that do direct deposit aren't in the office over the
break. whatever. perhaps i'll get it removed next time.

i don't see it as a problem really, as i've always got a
few months salary in the account. as i see it, if my cash
management skills are so poor that i can't survive a
month without my china salary, then i should be living
in mom's basement.
