I've heard people say that several times now, but every teacher I've ever known has a work permit. I don't think I could work here and feel secure in my job if I didn't have one. Maybe it's a southern thing? Things seem more free and lax with the law there. I've never worked in Saigon, so I'm not sure. |

The never ending saga of the work dysfunction in Vietnam. Yet its worth discussing, because it affects us.
1. Is a WP needed? At some schools (and more and more schools) yes.
At many schools, it's not cared about it.
2. If the authorities wanted the WP to get done in a reasonable process, many instructors would have them. The process (and cost for those who pay their own cost) is unreasonable.
3. Who does it or can it affect you? If you want to avoid making visa runs for an expensive 3-month visa or if you want to stay securely in VN for a longer period of time, it's probably worth it to get one.
I know a lot of long-timers who can qualify for a work permit that used ot have a WP but they left the school they were at and now work for a school(s) that does not support WPs.
One example, is the high paying place in Hanoi.
If you want stability, don't come to VN. If you are easy going, flexible, and willing to leave for better pastures, then give Vietnmam a whirl. |
