AJMAN // An English teacher has been fired for using his belt to whip more than a dozen school pupils.
According to an Emirates Human Rights Association report, the man, who worked at a high school in Ajman, beat 16 10th graders in October.
After EHRA presented the findings to the Ministry of Education, the teacher was fired.
Mohammed Al Kaabi, EHRA’s chairman, said the association condemned the act, which “runs counter to modern teaching methods and educational laws applicable in the UAE”, Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National, reported.
Mr Al Kaabi said handing out appropriate punishments for these kinds of assaults would deter other people from doing the same.

No criminal prosecution or child abuse against him?
I wonder if the English teacher is an expat from ..???? |

From the stories that I have heard of what goes on in secondary school classrooms, I tend to suspect that the little darlings probably deserved it. And of course, corporal punishment is common in Egyptian public schools.

It used to be common in Saudi public schools. In the 1970s when I was with the Ministry of Education they had a member of staff (non-teacher, ex-military) prowling the corridors looking for boys to flog. |

Well, scotty, unfortunately, the practice of flogging child students is still alive in some parts of the Magic Kingdom in 2014!!
The evidence:
Muslim Cleric flogging 13 Child Students in Saudi Arabia:
The teacher is a Bangladeshi Cleric!!!

It depends upon the parents, we have parents that give permission if necessary to use "whatever methods you need" on their children and some even say "just send me the bones home" or "just send me their eyes". Plus these students know if they complain, they will get it worse at home. Even Emiratis use the stick and give permission as well.
Who uses the bamboo camel cane, well how about these countries:
Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, etc. An Egyptian teacher of Arabic Studies told me Arab boys only understand the stick, nothing else.
I tend to agree with him because I was in a school that tried the American way and that was a disaster. My current school, I am in management now, has way more flexibility and discipline.
Corporal punishment is part of Arab society, except those who let their children run like wild animals and expect the maid or nanny to raise them. |
