How many people on here have had some of their own material published in any kind of ESL journal or publication?
Can you provide links to the article or journal?
I'm wondering how common it is for teachers to make the step up into publications. And would also like to get some links to interesting reading material and online journals that I might want to subscribe to.
At what stage in your careers did you begin getting in to publishing?
Teachers that have published material, do many now only do this kind of work, having moved away from teaching?
I imagine it must be a satisfying feeling having some work published. |

In my experience, it's not so much a matter of "publishing", but rather one of doing research. The "publishing" is easy (i.e., the writing of the manuscript and sending it to journals); conducting research (i.e., having an idea of what you want to investigate, knowing what else has been done in that area, designing the research, and carrying out the project) is much harder.
Doing this type of publishing (i.e., academic or research publishing) doesn't pay any money, so it doesn't really allow one to "only do this kind of work". Research-only positions in TESOL/Applied Linguistics are quite rare. If you are talking about publishing popular books, that might pay some money.
If you want to get into doing research, the best way to start is by reading lots of research articles, and figuring out what you are interested in. Taking graduate courses would help immensely also.
Some journals that might be of interest:
More practitioner-oriented journals:
ELT Journal
Asian EFL Journal
TESL-EJ
TESOL Journal
Journal of Asia TEFL
More "academic" journals (not really geared toward teachers, but it's good to know what is out there and what the current issues in SLA are):
Language Learning
Studies in Second Language Acquisition
Applied Linguistics
The Modern Language Journal
TESOL Quarterly
There are some journals that are focused more on specific areas, such as:
Reading in a Foreign Language
The Reading Matrix
For people starting out and wanting to publish something for the first time, your local TESOL affiliate might have a journal of some type (e.g., INTESOL Journal in Indiana or the MEXTESOL Journal in Mexico), or possibly some other local language teachers' association (e.g., JALT in Japan has a few publications). TESOL Int'l Assoc. has some more info about journals here: http://www.tesol.org/docs/books/how-to-get-published-in-applied-linguistics-serials.pdf and here: http://www.tesol.org/docs/pdf/1026.pdf |

Some great info and links there, thank you, I'll get stuck in to some of those.
I was under the impression that writing articles for such publications would be a nice little earner though.
All interesting things to think about for the future. |
