I hear a lot of positive things about working in Taiwan as I do about working in Japan. However, I'd like to know the pros and cons of both countries from people who have worked in both. And which country do you prefer?
Taiwan - Pro. Has a low cost of living, delicious food and the people are very friendly.
Con. Nearly every job pays by the hour, so you're never really sure how much you will make every month. Bad air pollution in Taipei.
Japan - Pro. Guaranteed monthly salary from trustworthy employers that always pay you on time.
Con. High cost of living (especially groceries - fruit in particular). Using telephones is highway robbery in this country. |

Being the TEFL job "seeking" applicant that I am, I'll point your attention to the fact that there are still several private schools (along with Gaba) in Japan still that pay by the hour, they're about 30% though.
Living expenses in Taipei are cheap, but I've been told (in a thread I made here) that the salaries aren't barely on par with them.
You should take a look at the korean section, they have a couple of sticky threads comparing TEFL in east asian countries in details. |

Depends what you want. Taipei smog is bad.
Life is relaxed there. If you aren`t as concerned about money, go try it.
Summers are really hot. The food is better.
Tokyo tends to stress me out at times but Taiwan does not. |
