Thanks for reading!
We are currently teaching in Shenyang, China. Our contract is finishing this summer and we would like to teach another year, two, or three... in China..
We would like to teach at the University level (we are doing that now) but somewhere warmer and a lot less polluted (air). City life doesn't fit us but with two young kids, super rural probably wouldn't be the right fit. I'm steadily reading about different areas in preparation for the Fall of 2014.
Any help would be appreciated!
Me: 29, white male. ED.D. STEM (ABD), MBA, 5 years teaching experience
Ex-wife: 31, white female, MBA, 2 years teaching experience
Kids: 6 and 4. We are doing fine co-parenting and home schooling. |

I'm teaching 16hrs/week for 5,300 RMB now. Housing, utilities, and lunch provided. I try to be as frugal as possible. I really just don't have a range.. Typically more is better
Teaching hours would have to remain around 20 so the Ex can teach 20 opposite of me. That's how we are set up now... Opposite schedules. I'll teach 16-20 and she will teach the other slots per week.

| If pollution really is your number 1 deciding factor, then look towards Yunnan. I've heard Hainan touted as pollution free, though sometimes the AQI lists Haikou as quite polluted. Though that's still cleaner than the majority of other places in China! |

Warmer weather compared to Shenyang is probably the first deciding factor. |

I've looked at the aqicn map quite a bit for the last 2 months, as I am coming to China soon.
in my statistics the only places with constant "good" air were:
- the south-east coast from Xiamen to Whenzhou
- Hainan
- Taiwan
- and believe it or not, Beijing had many really clean days. (more than Shanghai) |

Something doesn't quite add up...
I know it's not my business, but I'm a Yenta by trade, so that's why I'm curious... |

You could look at teaching at adjacent universities which would give you two apartments.
Harder to get a schedule that allows you to be 'on' and ex 'off' but a useful line of enquiry.
In Dalian where I worked way back, the Maritime, Technology and Finance Us (3) were within walking distance.
In these unusual scenarios I counsel casting a wide net. |

I follow Haikou's AQI almost daily. It's not BJ or SH, but it's no picnic there, either. Usually around 150. |

That's what we are doing now. Separate apartments and separate universities but very close together. |

I'd be tempted to send you details about our Uni, but
1. Ningbo may be one of the less polluted cities, but that's not saying much.
but more importantly 2. the bulk of classes tend to be at 8am - 11.30 each morning, and thus everybody tends to teach at the same time. In fact it's been a problem as it would be good to be able to see other teachers' classes; both other foreign teachers, and the native teachers that I've been told are the best ones. When you add in the fact that teaching takes place over two campuses, it would just be impossible to have two teachers whose classes were at different times.
Still, maybe this will be less of a problem in other Unis.
Unis like married couples, and the two of you are the next best thing. |

Great.
Dalian doesn't meet the proviso as to warmer climate tho.
Perhaps others can throw in some more southerly situations where there are unis in close proximity.
I've tended to work Liaoning/Shandong. |
