I'm looking for any information on how not having a degree will affect teaching in Thailand.
I have a CELTA as well as some teaching experience.
I'm flying to Thailand in a few weeks and will look for work but I'd like to know in advance how debilitating not having a degree may or may not be for me. As far as I'm aware a degree is needed merely for visa purposes, however I'd like to know if there's way around it.
Any advice, information (or even better - job offers) would be much appreciated.

Hello there,
There are a lot of teachers teaching here without a degree (mostly backpackers)....just remember your chances of finding a decent paying job along with a work permit are slim. A work permit is need to teach legally...without one you will be doing frequent visa runs and if caught...you risk being.fined and deported. Good luck! |

I've never seen or heard of that happening to anyone for working illegally without a work permit, not ever. I know of individuals that have been arrested for using faked documents. That you don't want to do. It's taken personally by the police. |

Hi,
Yep, that's sort of what I figured - it should be easy enough to find work, but whether that work is well paid and legitimate or not is another matter entirely I suppose. Annoying as when I did my CELTA they were adamant that I would get a better paid job than if I did a TEFL but it almost sounds like with no degree it makes very little difference.
Thanks for the advice.
I hear it's a bit easier in Vietnam. Anyone know or should I post in that forum instead?
Cheers. |
