Hi.

I'm an Australian coming to Japan in 10 days on a 90 day tourist visa. I will be seeking work (that's another story) and have been advised by sources close to me that immigration will not ask to see evidence of an onward or return journey. Currently I possess a one way ticket from Melbourne, Australia, to Haneda Airport.

To me this sounds quite shocking as most countries I have been to always want to see such evidence; perhaps I have been out of the travel game for too long. I feel like buying a cheap and therefore disposable ticket from Japan to Korea to function as such proof. I've also considered buying a ticket with a moveable date for later travel, but I'll ask about that later.

SO....

Can anyone recommend cheap flights/ferries from Japan to Korea?
I'm thinking something along the lines of Nagasaki or Hiroshima to Busan.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Many times, it's not immigration but the airline that will want you to have onward travel arrangements already in place. So, even if immigration is OK with your one-way ticket, whatever airline you are taking might not be.

A ferry ticket to Korea is pretty cheap, from what I've heard. You could also spring for a fully-refundable plane ticket -- it'll be quite expensive up-front, but you'd be able to cancel it and get a full refund.

That's news to me.

As far as I know, most people don't get the chance to test that theory, because the airline won't let them board without either a residency visa or evidence of an onward journey. And if you get turned back at the border, you'll be locked in "transit accommodation" until you can find some way to pay the enormous cost of a short-notice ticket home, plus expenses. Well, that's what happens at Narita.

Just don't get stranded, okay? And think long and hard about the risks of working without a visa. If you don't get paid, what are you going to do about it? It happens.

I think the cheapest goes from Hakata, which is halfway between Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Beetle ferry.

If you're sure you won't use it, look into the possibility of cancelling the ticket once you're in Japan. You might be able to get most of you're ticket cost back.

Check out these two airlines, they're incredibly cheap. I flew from Osaka to Seoul for less than 15,000 yen return with one of them.

Jetstar
Peach

If that fails, google skyscanner.

I'm an Aussie and I've been asked by the airline (Jetstar) to show proof of onward travel when I've had a one way ticket. I'd booked on the ferry and a printout of the internet page with my booking was enough to make them happy.

Btw you can book the ferry from Fukuoka to Busan online, pay by credit card then only get charged a minimal service fee if you cancel it. It takes a whle for the money to go back onto your credit card though. A couple of weeks from memory.
