Hello

I've been in Bangkok (Living near Mo Chit BTS) for six weeks now, and I'm really struggling to find a job (I'll take anything near-ish the MRT/BTS, around 33,000 or above)

I've been spamming emails out every day but it's not looking too good. Only been offered a few positions but they've been too far North, or they've flaked on me last minute (had this happen three times now, after thinking I had the job).

Anyone have any tips for internet-based applications?

Been using Ajarn, spamming recruiters, posting my resume up and looking in Newspapers for advertisements

Maybe I should run around with my resume, but in this day and age, surely I'd be able to catch something through email?

Any good sites to check? or good recruiters to use? (possible oxymoron for the latter entry)

Thank you

Hi there,

Go knock on doors in BKK...that's what I advise....you will then be hit with offers to teach English (That is if your a Native Speaker). Go to Siam Square, Victory Monument and Sukhumvit Road areas. Make sure you wear a suit, tie and colorful dress shirt and gray color slacks with polished black color shoes as Thais are very much into "appearance" so if you look the role you are most likely to be offered a job at any of the language institutes. Good luck!

I can strongly relate to how you feel. I have been in Thailand since early November. My online applications and e-mails to schools I thought were high percentage bets to get at least an interview have been mostly ignored, with a few cursory responses ("Thank you for your interest in working for ___. If short-listed, you will be contacted.").

Some of this may be due to a slow time of year for hiring or stronger competition for fewer jobs than in other Asian countries. A good indication of the latter is the loads of resumes you see posted on Ajarn by job-seekers with M.A. or better plus many years of experience, and here they are still struggling to find a decent job.

Just the same, I really believe ageism is the main culprit in my case, and part of making the "short list" means being under 45 max. Some ads even blatantly stipulate this, which I actually prefer because it saves me the trouble of applying to an employer who sees my DOB and sends my file to the recycle bin.

Must admit that I haven't tried pounding the pavement. It is theoretically possible that if I scurried around Bangkok dressed like a banker and managed to show up on site not drenched with perspiration and on the verge of heat stroke, I might wow them with vitality that belies my chronological age. But as much as I love visiting Thailand, when I consider the climate (both physical and political) and current state of transportation, for me it frankly isn't worth all that for 33,000 baht a month.

However things go, I wish you the best of luck. If change of strategy works for you, please let us know.

If you are looking for jobs in schools, it is a bad time now as the school year is almost over. In March and April schools will be looking for teachers. You will have better luck then. Keep trying, something will come along.
