There was a post a couple of weeks ago but only one response and not very definitive. The medical form indicates tests for HIV, TB, etc but doesn't say anything about tests for drugs.
Does anyone know the real story?
BTW, I don't take illegal drugs. I just had some minor surgery and the medication they gave me may cause a false positive so I am just trying to be proactive. |

I have never heard of anyone being drug tested in China as part of the medical exam. |

That's a hilarious response. You've never heard of it? Well, you were tested as well.
It's the national requirement that all foreigners, as part of their medical exam are tested for cocaine, heroine, and marijuana. The tests are specific for those and are also sensitive to other narcotics that have been consumed in very high doses. |

Narcotic tests are pretty expensive to make from what i've heard.
When i looked through my exam, there was no section about narcotics. I never heard about a test for narcotics. I know plenty of people who smoked cannabis and passed the test without a any problems
Maybe they're supposed to test for it, but don't. . |

If this is the case, have you ever heard of a foreigner failing their medical for this reason? |

Babala and the others,
Yes, it is true what sulutandousi writes.
During the medical procedure, the FT is screened for drugs. It does not figure on the checklist that you are given but for a fact the FT is checked for it.
I worked in Guangzhou with a person from DC who must have been a user of some-kind-or-the-other. His exam trigerred all the bells, so-to-speak, and the PSB called the school, and the school and the PSB came for a visit, and he was chucked out of the country faster than anything that I had ever seen before. Additionally, all of the FT's were then sent for another medical, specifically for that purpose.
The degree and acuity of vigilance may vary from one province to another, all things said this is still China. |

I wonder how high of a drug level you would have to test to fail and be deported? I ask this because like theincredibleegg, I have known some teachers that I can't believe could pass a drug test have no trouble with the medical.
xiao51,
Just out of curiosity, did they re-test that teacher to confirm the results? I ask this because I have only known one teacher to be deported due to their blood test results and that one was HIV positive but the teacher in question was re-tested first to confirm. |

Also, a good tip is to not take ANY acetaminophen (Tylenol) for at least 5 days prior to the exam. People who take Tylenol on a semi-regular basis can have enough increase in their AST/ALT (liver enzymes) to freak out some medical offices to think of hepatitis. |

Dear Babala,
He refused to allow himself to be retested. It was quite the row, that I will tell you. The PSB also ransacked his apartment looking for drugs, that I will tell you (I was his neighbor and all of the neighbors were also "visited" because of his "behavior").
He was a nice enough person at certain moments, but the behavioral patterns were totally erratic. It was apparent that something was up. Anyway, when he went to the Guangzhou Foreigner's Hospital, the examining physician must have decided something "was up". His bloodwork was done on an expedited basis (practically on the spot) and that was a Tuesday, the results were reported to the PSB that very day and the school and the PSB came calling the very next day. It was quite the summary execution so to speak. We were only allowed to return to our flats after he had been chucked out.
Anyway, he's actually a member of this board and I see him posting now-and-then but I never deal with him directly nor do I want to know where he is now.

I doubt that any tests for grass/hash are made in Shenyang. In teacher type bars, it's smoked openly. It also grows more or less wild. You can pick your own if you like.
I have a friend who usually harvested at least a large garbage bag full each Fall. Then he made hash oil. |

Specualtion:
They only do the drug test if they suspect that the RP-applicant might be a drug-user? |

Well then dude, you'd be speculating extremely wrong - IT IS a basic REQUIREMENT of the medical exam. Feel free to ask your local Ministry of Health. |

I won't believe that the Guangzhou PSB - or any other PSB - would clandestinely seek to get a drug test administered to anyone; why wouldthey do that in such a way?
I had a medical exam last year in Guangzhou; there are two appointed clinics in that city - one on Shamian Island and one in Tianhe. The forms the medical staff there fill in are bilingual. Standard tests include a blood test to determine whether you are an HIV carrier; an eye test and something else (that doesn't need bodily fluids). Of course, your heart is checked too.
I do believe that in individual cases, some authority or other may require you to have you undergo special extra tests, but I am positive no one has drugs tests done on them on the sly.
By the way, I wouldn't mind if these became routine although I recognise that many medical drugs users might be inconvenienced by them. But a forewarning by these test takers to the medical staff in that clinic could take care of any such problem. |

Yes, it probably is. But that doesn't mean that the requirement is implemented.
I think they test for drugs when they suspect something is up. To test some people exclusively may be against formal directives from the government, but then again - There are plenty of directives in China that aren't followed.

The police are however, allowed to request testing if your out at a club and they feel your behavior warrents the test.... |
