Mine will expire in March of 2015.
If I sign on with a school from September 2014 to June 2015 when will I need to have my passport updated? |

Before you sign that contract you'd need a new passport I *think*.
Can't imagine the PSB giving an RP covering dates that you do not currently have a valid passport for. |

No they don't. If your passport will expire during a contract you'll get a residence permit to take you to the time your passport expires. You'll get another residence permit to take you to the end of your contract once you get the new passport. Schools don't care when your passport expires, immigration officials do, but an expiring passport still won't prevent you from getting a job. Where do people come up with some of this stuff? |

Stop for a moment and think about it. Forget the law...forget your experiences. If you were an employer would you be quick to sign an FT who only had 3 or 6 months on their passport for a 10 or 12 month job? I wouldn't. I'd wonder why the hell the FT didn't take care of their business earlier and spare me any potential headaches mid contract. |

Maybe it depends where you come from but some government agencies won't renew a passport until it has less than six months on it or it's full, or you have less than a year and can show you're about to go on extended travel. If I personally wanted an employee to do a job, a soon to expire passport would be the least of my worries regarding their qualifications or suitability. I'd feel differently if the person is still in their home country or had no history in China (or some similar scenario), but someone with less than six months on a passport probably isn't going to get a Z visa on that passport anyway. Too many "ifs" and "maybes" to consider for consistent answers across the board. As to the original statement "Most schools want to see at least one year remaining on your passport before they offer you a contract." sez who?

I agree. I won't try to claim what most schools would or wouldn't do. Only what I would do.
This isn't the first time we agree and disagree with each other at the same time. 
I guess it comes down to whoever does the hiring if the PSB is out of the equation. |

Is the cost per year of a passport so horrendous that getting it renewed to avoid problems is an issue?
Don't live close to the line in China. Where you can have a margin of safety get it. |
