|
|
Hey all,
Does anyone happen to know if uni teachers are generally permitted to stay in school-provided housing over summer break? I know that most teachers leave campus over break, but I was curious if anyone has ever just stayed put as well.
I ask b/c I just accepted a uni position right outside Beijing for Fall 2014, and the following summer I'd like to do the CELTA in Beijing and thought I could just stay in the school-provided apartment while doing the course.
Thanks in advance for any feedback. |

Sure -- but I'm interested to know, in general, if this is something people do or not and if their unis are okay w/ it. I did ask the contact person at the school, but haven't gotten a response yet. |

I've done it on and off for the past 2 summers with no problem, although the last summer they did want me to cover the cost of the electricity for the two months, but that didn't amount to very much - less than 60 bucks for the whole period. They wanted me to write a waiver letter too that if anything went wrong with me, or the place during the summer that it was my responsibility, and not the school's.
Having been said different schools different policies. Best to check with your future FAO direct. |

| Thanks, Toast -- good to know there's some precedent, but I'll definitely ask the school again to see what they say. |

Two situations where I did that.
1. I arrived early by moving just a block or two from my old school. I didn't want to stay a minute longer at the old place. The new school had an apartment free and there were no problems moving in. I actually taught Summer School that year and spent Wednesday to Sunday in another town.
2. I had signed on for another year so I was a 'continuing teacher'.
I doubt that you could stay on for all the summer if you had not signed for another year. However a week or so shouldn't be a problem. That is, assuming an amicable parting.
As always TIC. |

| I think a lot of institutions have programs which run during the down time o uni's...they often rent out the rooms |

| I stayed at the school apartment over the summer and was paid for the time. Had no restrictions, no problems & did a bit fo travelling. But it will certainly depend on the school. |

The last public college where I worked paid for round trip tickets home instead. The school before that tried to make us check into a hotel at our expense. It wasn't in the contract, so everyone bugged out.
You really must ask the specific school. I believe that a lot of public institutions are implementing austerity programs and don't want to pay for utilities or extra guards during the summer.

Southern hemisphere folk don't want to go home in the July-August holiday. |

I'll definitely have to try and get a definite answer from the school. Anyway, thanks to everybody who responded. |

I didn't stay at my first school another year. I was told by another first year teacher that he was allowed to move in at the end of June. After our academic year of teaching was over we were allowed to stay until the third week of July if we didn't intend on staying another year.
I arrived at my new school about the third week of June and stayed the entire summer before classes began at the end of August. |
