|
|
My wife and I are looking for work in the KSA. She has a BA in english and 2 years experience, I have a BA in an unrelated field and 2 years experience also. We are currently working in China.
Obviously her resume is more attractive because of the english BA, so I was wondering if it is possible for her to sponsor me as a dependent, after which I can search for work while in the country.
Also on a side note, how realistic are our chances? It seems that working in the KSA gets more and more competitive every year and we aren't as qualified or experienced as we'd like to be.
thanks. |

You're both unqualified for the better, direct-hire positions; however, a contracting company might take you on as a couple. Just be aware many of these companies tend to be sketchy. Also, you didn't mention if you both have a CELTA or equivalent TEFL cert---the lack of one won't get your CV a second look. |

Online certs (even hybrid ones) won't cut it; ditto for TEFL cert courses that entailed less than 100 hours of instruction. I suggest you both invest in a CELTA course if you want to teach in KSA. Look at the job ads posted on the Cafe to see what minimum qualifications are needed.

Nomad Soul is right. Personally I think CELTA is a load of hokum but you need one if you want to be taken seriously in KSA. Even people with PhDs and years of experience were told to go and get a CELTA in my time at KFUPM. Those that got a CELTA after being told to do so, got hired. The others disappeared into the Void. |

Once you get your CELTAs, then apply. The good thing is that contracting companies hire year round. The tricky thing is in both of you getting hired to teach for the same project/client (albeit, on different campuses). Also, some teachers are only issued single or bachelor-status visas which usually means gender-segregated housing is provided. Therefore, look for job ads that: 1) target both male and female teachers; 2) encourage married couples to apply; and 3) include the option of a housing allowance and possibly a transportation allowance as well. Your cover letters should state that you're seeking work as a (childless?) married couple. Lastly, as I previously posted, being employed by a contracting company can be a mixed bag since many of these companies tend to be sketchy. Since some job ads are posted by recruiters, once you find out who the actual employer is, research the company thoroughly before accepting an offer. |
