Hi,
I worked at that school. I'd be happy to answer any specific questions that you might have.

Plume,
I'd be really interested in what your experience was like as I have been contacted by this school as well.
Just a couple questions for you:
1) How did you find your colleagues/administration?
2) What was your work load like?
3) How were the students?
3) What part of town did faculty general tend to rent in?
Any info would be great! PM if you would like.
Cheers! |

This below is what i am familiar with;
Nice appartment complex on the foot of a hill, a couple hills in fact.
No large supermarket around although there's 711 and a couple small food markets at the next door residence. Farmers market, Macdonalds and KFC are a mile down the road nearby the subway station.
Tennis courts (poorly maintained), swimming pool at a nearby hotel and the subway station (Yongtai line 3) one stop by bus or half a mile on foot.
Brits have been trying to manage the school and a majority of the staff members are Brits, out of which some are visibly happy. Perhaps, it's worth mentioning that one was really ticked a couple years back. My take is that that was related to a local interference. Worth mentioning that a few local staff members are helpful, as i have seen.
Some students are lovely some not as everywhere i guess. To my knowledge, the issue appears to be that some rich parents attempt to push the school to accept their inadequate level of English kids.
The offer with all the benefits is much higher than the local standards and that remuneration well corresponds with the heavier workload as this is an internationally licensed school.
Good luck |

This is an old thread, but I need to correct the wrong info from the last post.
The original poster asked about Guangzhou Nanhu International School (GNIS). This is a well-known international school in Guangzhou, with a large foreign staff (and Chinese) and a mix of Chinese and international students. Its location is in downtown Tianhe, close to the Sports Center, although it is moving to Long Dong, a not-so-downtown area, in the fall of 2014.
There is a separate Nanhu Lake in Baiyun district, north of Baiyun Mountain, that is completely unconnected with GNIS, and that is what the previous poster was describing. The British School of Guangzhou is in this area. It is also a well-known international school.
Hope that helps anyone. |

You just reminded me how much I miss IgorG.
Wish I could take him - and whoever Hilena is this week - out for cheeseburgers. Igor was absolute comedy gold. |
