|
|
Hello all. I'm a Canadian male, 29 years old, recently arrived to Japan on a work holiday visa. I'm in Osaka right now and I have a part-time job already teaching English on Saturdays, but I need something more to make enough money. I'm looking for a full-time job anywhere in the Osaka area but I'm rapidly running out of time and money to come up with something.
The main problems I'm having are that I don't have a degree or classroom teaching experience. I've done some tutoring and I have a TESOL certificate, but this doesn't seem to be enough for most places. I have no objection to working at a language or conversation school. I've tried different sites for jobs, but I'm still having trouble. Is there any service I can use to help me find a job for me? Are there any other options or suggestions? Any assistance would be really appreciated.

I believe a working holiday visa is good for only a limited time (12 months total in most cases), so you'd better hustle. Besides, I also believe a WHV allows you to do only part-time work, so you'd better double hustle. Private lessons or several part-time jobs seem to be the answer, and it takes a while to get privates. Perhaps you could sign up with a service such as:

What sites have you tried? If you don't tell us, we'll just waste our time posting ideas such as...
www.jobsinjapan.com
www.gaijinpot.com
www.ohayosensei.com
www.jobseekjapan.com
(I assume you've looked at www.eslcafe.com.)

I will not say "I told you so" regarding lack of a degree and difficulty in finding work. Some people do fairly well under those circumstances, but those that I've heard of are extremely lucky, or extremely persistent, headstrong, and go-getters. It often takes quite a lot to convince an employer to hire you without that degree. I also won't say your resume sucks, or that you can't write a cover letter, or that your interviewing skills leave a lot to be desired, because I don't know anything about them. However, I will politely suggest that you re-evaluate those three items and see if you could improve them. Wouldn't hurt.
Best of luck. |
