Well, lets just forget everything and not be happy that there were no shots fired in this "invasion." Should have been more like...Wake up people!

I heard Michael Portillo talking sense on this today. Unusual in Tory politicos but he actually had the temertity to say, "It is none of our business. We screwed up on Iraq, Afghanmistan, Libya and Syria. We should stay out of this imbrogluio."

He is also the only Tory I have herard saying trhat Trident is a strageiuc nonsense and our equivalent of the Maginot Line 1 Almost enough to make me belive in the Conservative Party.

A bunch of military officers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe that attempted to enter Crimea have just woken up somewhere on the border. Warning shots were fired today.

Dear John,

Radicals have created the situation in Ukraine.

Quote:
1939: Hitler invades Poland to "protect" ethnic Germans in Poland.
2014: Putin invades Ukraine to "protect" ethnic Russians in Ukraine.
Quite some facts there. To my knowledge, Ukraine/Crimea played a major role in WWII. Ukrainians sold themselves to Hitler, although later they realized that he used them as slaves only which, perhaps too late, pissed them off. Soviet Army historically kicked some arse in Crimea and Hitler's fall began. So, Crimea must have some value to all who fought against Hitler; and, perhaps some value for those who supported him too. The parallel is preposterous however.

Quote:
He is not in Ukraine but he is." In what fantasy land is Putin "not in Ukraine?"

"He is losing money but he is not." One fact: that Russia IS losing money - followed by unsupported opinions.

Would you please specify and document just what JFK did in 1962? Thanks.
It's not about the fantasy but balls and brain like I said! It's not about "opinions" but facts from history of wars and markets. 1962, as an example, was the year of Cuban missile crisis and markets fell plenty and rebounded well then.

Who Putin has learned from isn't hard to see; Stalin as one, post WWII American presidents as the others.

Respectfully yours,
Joe

I never supported the Iraq war. Indefensible. Groundless. However, in defense of US foreign policy, I must point out that the US left Iraq when the US government and the Iraqi government failed to reach an agreement on the status of forces. The US left its bases in the Philippines in 1992 when the Philippines had had enough. The US has the tendency to leave places, often places that they should never have entered in the first place (Iraq, Vietnam). Granted, this also creates problems.

Aside from stunning the world, what exactly have Putin and Russia gained from annexing Crimea? They will get some old ethnic Russians who are quite enthusiastic to return to the motherland. But they also get more ethnic minorities -Ukrainians, Crimean Tartars, who will not be happy. Here in the US, I have had a few Crimean Tartars as students. Stalin moved them to Uzbekistan; Gorby allowed them to return. I have had Tajiks who were moved to Uzbekistan, Uzbeks who were moved to Kyrgyzstan, and on and on.

So, what happens next? A bare chested Putin rides off into the sunset with his new acquisition? How does end well for Russia?

Dear DaliTime,

"How does (it) end well for Russia?

As in all such reckless misadventures, no matter who initiates them, it doesn't.

John

Dear Johnslat

You may well turn out to be right in the end. However, this isn't the Cuban missile crisis revived, and is not as reckless as it may appear...

Best wishes

Sasha

The Current State of the Ukraine may depend on the March 16th moment of truth which apparently is the day when Crimea, based on its referandum, plans to officially break away from Ukraine to join Russia.

One night Putin has a dream and he meets Stalin and he says, "Oh Stalin, what should I do to keep power?"

Stalin says, "Rig the elections, kill your oppoents and paint the Duma blue!"

Putin looks confused. "Why blue?" Wink

Neither did I until Google came to the rescue once more!

Stalin's ghost appears to Putin in a dream, and Putin asks for his help running the country. Stalin says,
"Round up and shoot all the democrats, and then paint the inside of the Kremlin blue."
"Why blue?" Putin asks.
"Ha!" says Stalin. "I knew you wouldn't ask me about the first part."

I mean, really?

It is a clear copy of the Hitler and the bicycle mechanic joke.

Sigh...
