Last year (2013) and this year (2014), I attended Expat gatherings of about 15-20 English teachers from England, Jamaica, the USA, Canada, Ireland, Russia (but raised in the USA) and China (but raised in the USA). The following is the updated list for (2014) of the 5 schools from Mexico City that seemed to be on everyone's list of schools to avoid for Expats, with short summaries of what the teachers described as why they would avoid working at these schools.
WESTHILL
Serious administrative issues, unruly students, payment problems, unreasonable parents in regards to disciplinary issues and grades. Teachers often quit after several weeks or do not return after breaks.
PETERSON
One of the administrators, who is in charge of hiring for her department, is an older white woman from the USA. She hasn't lived in the USA for over 30 years and she seems to hold on to racial biases from her upbringing. She has in the past, made it clear that she is uncomfortable with teachers of color and behind closed doors has made insensitive and racial comments regarding people of color.
WINPENNY
Serious administrative issues, unruly students, unreasonable parents in regards to disciplinary issues and grades. Teachers often quit after several weeks or do not return after breaks.
ATID
Administrative issues, unruly students, unreasonable parents in regards to disciplinary issues and grades. Teachers often quit after several weeks or do not return after breaks.
NORTHRIDGE SCHOOL MEXICO
Non-Catholic teachers are required to attend school masses and religious retreats which can be a problem for non-Catholic teachers. Also, serious administrative issues, unruly students, disciplinary issues and race-based hiring practices (similiar to Peterson) due to the racial preferences of a few parents. Teachers often quit after several weeks or do not return after breaks. |
