Hi -- I haven't seen a topic like this. I'm sure it exists, I've searched, just can't find it.
What are the general contract lengths, months of general recruiting, months of start/ end, what certifications/ qualifications/ etc needed, for countries around the world? China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, etc.?
It'd be nice for beginners to have that kind of info so we know how to schedule things like getting our passports and taking TEFL courses without limiting our options! |

Having a passport in hand is SO basic - just do it. It's almost funny that someone hasn't got one, so far as most of the world is concerned.
I can speak for Europe (which is not a legal option if you are from North America anyway). Most contracts are Sept/Oct thru June. Little summer work around, and it usually goes to teachers with experience/contacts in the region.
Further, the option to take a course in the country where one wants to start teaching has some definite advantages. |

US passports take 6 weeks - 2 months standard to get. So, it can wind up being a scheduling issue. Add a 5 month TEFL course, and you're looking at 7 months of things to worry about.. or pay the extra money to get the passport expedited and take a 1 month cram course -- and with jobs starting in September.. Well - this is why I want to know this info |

Just apply for the passport today regardless. It's simply silly not to have one.
Most TEFL courses are one month, not five. |

Then apply for your passport asap---get it out of the way since you're aware the process can be time-consuming. Seriously, a US passport is valid for 10 years, so your concern about "scheduling" is a non-issue. But applying for it now is the most logical strategy unless you're only daydreaming about teaching abroad at this point. |

Most of this has been discussed ad nauseum on the country-specific boards. Go look around in each one, and see what you can find. The Korea boards are separate from these boards, and require a separate registration.
For Japan, the academic year starts April 1. Most recruiting for jobs in public schools is done from December - February for an April 1 start. The JET Programme (government-sponsored program) has an application deadline in November/December for a July/August start. Private language companies hire year-round, as they generally don't follow the academic year. After you apply, interview, and are offered the job, the visa paperwork typically takes 1-3 months. Almost all contracts are for 12 months.

Don't schedule getting your passport. Get it now. Immediately. Many employers will expect you to already have a passport when you apply for jobs, not just when you start the job.
It could be helpful to schedule a TEFL course so that you can look for a job soon after finishing the course. Of course, the course options available and the timing of looking for a job will depend on the country you want to teach in. As Spiral said, most legit, entry-level, on-site TEFL courses are 1 month (full-time). What kind of certification you need will also vary by job type and by country. A 1-month cert (like CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, or SIT TESOL) may be the standard for some jobs, but for others it's overkill, while for others it's substandard. Where are you interested in teaching, and what type of job? |
