I was told that if you don't finish your contract to the very end you will be made to pay for release letters. Can they do this? Is it legal?

They are under no obligation to give you a release letter. They may have provided a flight to get your visa and they did the legwork to get you into the country for a year. Writing a release letter is using them as a stepping stone to a new job.

With that in mind, it is wise to work a little for no pay to get this letter of release. If you pissed them off to the point they are demanding cash instead of service then you need to work on your diplomatic skills.

What kind of garbage is that? It is required, by law that an employer provide you with a release letter indicating your period of employment. They are required to provide nothing more; but nothing less. The internet can show you the actual law in Chinese.

Know the difference between the release letter and the recommendation letter? Well, one is required by law....the other is not.

If you finish your contract you do NOT need a release letter.

I have done this 3 times so far.
