My newbie friend departs this week for ASIA!!! I said I would give him the names of some books that he should purchase and take with him to avoid unnecessary newbie problems, such as what is a freakin adverb???? Of course, I have forgotten most of the titles. I know
Swan, English something something, and
Azar, Grammar something something,
plus a good book called the Grammar Hammer that I have never laid eyes on.
I would be grateful for any ideas!
Many thanks in advance--

That's great, John, thanks. i have forwarded the info to my friend.
As for the Grammar Hammer book, I am just not sure (without checking) if that is the one that my CELTA trainers recommended. If so, they said it is an indispensable aid to the newbie.
hear that, newbies?

Don't know if this is what you have in mind, BUT if you're interested in basic grammar, parts of speech, simple clauses, blah blah blah - try checking out scholastic syllabi. Surely you can find these all over the net, then search titles from there.
I think in the U.S., this is typically taught at the middle school level. I remember getting alot of that info out of my 6th grade English textbook - be damned if I can remember wot it's called now... Anyway just an idea!
Something more advanced might be a copy of the St. Martin's Handbook, latest edition.
