Hello,

I searched and couldn't find a topic about this... So, what is a good salary in Shanghai? I mean, if they don't pay for your apartment. What is a salary that you can live decent with?

Thanks!

I am also thinking about moving to Shanghai, and am interested to know.

The linked to thread from Toast mentions a person having a salary of 8,000-10,000 per month, but most Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities offer that salary to off-the-boat teachers every day.

What is a FAIR salary for an experienced teacher for ~20 hours in Shanghai? Do we have anyone on this forum who has first-hand experience with the Shanghai job market?

P.S. Do middle/high schools in Shanghai not hire foreign teachers? I'd like to get a job in one so I have both a good salary and the extended holidays, but I've literally found one job listing for a middle/high school position and it didn't seem legitimate. And I've browsed hundreds of jobs in Shanghai..

Last year I made 12K a year at Kid Castle in SH, and that was low. We taught 18 - 20 hours a week, and then another 12 hours sitting around, bored or chewing the fat in the depraved little teacher's office. KC is always hiring, has high turnover, and it's not bad, just know what to expect. I also made 180 an hour subbing for two different places and an agency. I prefer subbing, it's actually pretty steady work, cash in hand daily/weekly, and as long as you are flexible and willing to commute possibly long distances, you can make decent coin.

Shanghai is a hustler's city. If you make connections, show a little flexibility and pay attention, you can find some good gravy there.

Disney pays 15K, but you will be working a lot more.

In Shanghai try any of these:

*finding a Korean school, they pay pretty well, but they are a joyless bunch when sober
*looking on www.echinacities.com - lots of off brand schools with decent *salaries (14-20K) for kindy work
*Wall Street if you have biz English experience - pays well, but you will be there the full 40 hours
*middle and high schools hire teachers, but only at certain times of the year, and the salary won't be high, but the work should be easy

I worked with a guy at KC last year who found, just by luck, a job paying double for fewer hours in a kindy. The $$$ is there.

Good luck.

If you work at a Uni. I think it would be around 6-7,000 per month (ESL classes) but if you specialize in something delivered in an ESP content based course, it could be higher (e.g., teaching Science, etc., but you need to be really good at your craft for this.). I knew a man from the US in Shanghai, who was teaching Chemistry at a University, and he was earning 25,000 a month.

If you are earning around 6-7,000 RMB, your housing should be included, so you can add on 3-4,000.

If you work at a smaller private school, you can earn around 10-15,000, maybe 20,000, depending on who you know, how much they like you, etc., but you won't find the luxuries as to be found in a Uni. job within the PRC (e.g., longer vacation time, more free time {which is good in the larger cities, as you can find part time work easily}). Don't take any part time jobs which pay less than 250-300 RMB per hour.
