I am being considered for a teaching position at a middle school in Beijing. If you have taught in a middle school in China, what was that like? How did you get on?
The jobs are located in Beijing which might be expensive but I am negotiating a higher salary. |

Hey man,
I think it really varies on what kind of school you get. I think in China there are different grades of schools. A, B, C quality, etc. The "A" quality ones in Chengdu have "better" students, but this does not necessarily mean that they have good grades, but a ton of money and what this creates is a sea of little shits in your class. I work in a school in the outskirts of the city, so, I have a lot of country kids who are eager to learn. I think that the worst type of school you can work in is one with spoilt children, they are a pain in the arse to deal with. But if you have a good Chinese teaching assistant, they will 9/10 times be able make their underwear change colors because they really have a different and one might call "unorthodox" way of disciplining them, but hey.. it works!
Good luck, I think you'll do just fine, but I think the biggest worry in the classroom is discipline, office politics seems non-existent for me.
Cheers!

I work for an organisation that provides teachers to local primary and middle schools and I can confirm what you are saying is totally true!
The richer schools are usually the worst to work in as the kids are spoilt due to a combination of their families' wealth and the effect of the one child policy.
You will need a stronger assistant in those types of schools.
By contrast, countryside schools usually have lovely students who genuinely appreciate your classes, though their English level may be lower as they generally can't afford to go to training schools. |

Do some homework!
Check out abroadchina.org to see what's available all over China and the salary ranges offered. The highest paying jobs don't advertise there as a rule, but you'll get a good idea of the prevailing wages throughout the country. |

I'm teaching at a middle school now. Nearly 60 kids per class with no Chinese assistant. Some days are very, very rough. But I've found that if I take the time to prepare a solid lesson, one that is interesting, then the lessons are great. Some days I walk out of school feeling like I have the best job in the world and others I wonder what the hell I'm doing with my life. It's a roller-coaster of emotions my friend. I say go for it |
