Hey,

Does anyone use a tablet for teaching/tutoring?

I wanted to purchase a kindle for personal reasons.

However I can't say how useful a kindle would be vs. a full featured tablet when it comes to teaching/tutoring, however being able to store textbooks on a device is the mostly useful thing that comes to mind.

I don't want to have tons of gadgets around, but besides using a kindle for personal reasons, does anyone know the value of purchasing a full-featured tablet long term would be vs a kindle?

Can't see too much value in a Kindle or equivalent e-reader. Maybe others can.

A full-on tablet can be used for multi-media & video, audio tracks, displaying 'flashcards', and the like. I do not think e-ink screens could manage nearly as well. Also, PDF files usually are not so easy to manage on Kindles and equivalents, so even downloaded course books or methodology books would be better on a tablet.

At least, that's my experience. But then I dislike most techie stuff in a classroom to begin with, so don't listen to me : )

Interesting. Yeah, I don't think I'll be getting a tablet yet, until I get to the point of needing one, but it's good to know it has a lot of applications. Seems like it would mostly be used for doing some fancy tutoring stuff, since small devices wouldn't really be able to be seen well in the classroom.

I took a language course (Japanese) last year and the instructor made good use of an iPad. She found some good clips online that she would play, then hand out worksheets with blanks. We had to watch and listen to it again and fill in the blanks. She also found videos that were related to the interest of some individuals. Class size was 6 people. The sound was good and we could scrunch together so everyone could see.

The tablet is a tool. It's all in how you use it.

Make a video. Have students write the script and act it out. Put it on YouTube (get permission if necessary first.)
Play it for them. Have them critique it.

Regards,
John

So was everyone sitting seats apart from each other until the tablet appeared?

The only in-class benefits I can envision with tablets is to differentiate input and controlled practice more effectively and efficiently gathering specific feedback on individual and overall class needs but as with all new tech in any sector, as Marshall McLuhan said, we try to make the new do the work of the old without realizing its full potential--such is the case with IWBs. In terms of freer practice, tablets and other web tech allows for class-to-class Skype calls between EFL learner in different countries which I'd written about on the tech forum here. Not surprisingly, tech in ELT is even more controversial than in regular education for numerous reasons and one is that most schools merely decorate their schools with such 'interactive' tech to justify higher tuition.

Here's a iPad app with a lot of promise for making meaning explicit without resorting to L1:
