Does anyone know of anywhere in Tokyo where I can get just a SIM card without buying a phone? I've got my iPhone 4S here, and an older phone that takes the larger SIM card - either would be fine as just need a phone to replace the one my company give new staff for the first month. Would be nice to get the iPhone up & running with some 3G coverage if possible.

Can anyone recommend a safe download so that I can watch things like BBC iPlayer or maybe even Sky Sports on my laptop? I've heard a few names like Expat Shield, but has anyone used this successfully?

I'm not sure about the sim card, but I believe that you cannot use phones from the UK in Japan. Try going to an AU or Softbank store and asking.

Expat shield works fine, but just remember to turn it off when you don't need to be using it.

An unlocked UK iphone should work fine in Japan, but it's unlikely you'll find a store willing to sell you just a SIM card. Even if they do, you'll still be tied into the same 2 year contract as you would if you also got a new plan. Your best bet would be to find someone looking to sell a SIM with a partially used contract, without the phone (it's not uncommon, try craigslist) and see if you can do it that way. I don't know for sure that it will work though.

To watch UK TV you don't need to download anything, just use Firefox broswer and their proxy server settings.

Tutorial here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hgjf9uQZQk, you can search for others on youtube.

Free, easy and nothing to download (never liked Expat shield, myself), i believe you can do the same with Chrome.
