living in those small town choices, absolutely you can save money, well over 3/5ths of the package I would say easily.
rent - 150-200
car 175
food /entertainment - 100 - 300 as you like |

Here's my take......rent-120-160, food etc-100, entertainment-if you can find any-50? A car will enable you to drive around the mountains looking for what aint there. |

If you live in a small town in the interior, yes.
If you're in or near Muscat, Salalah, Sohar, or one the larger towns, you won't save as much as the cost of living increases.
Lifestyle is of course another factor. If you're content sitting at home in the evenings glued to the internet or TV, rather than going out to resorts/hotels or restaurants, then you'll save a lot more.
After rent, cars/transport will be your biggest expense. Most people rent their first year, and then buy a car afterwards. Renting should cost no more than RO 180/mo, anywhere in the Sultanate. You can usually buy a nice used car from expats for RO 2500 or less. The common rule here is: ONLY BUY FROM EXPATS. The reason for this is stated in many threads on here.
Aside from these factors, everything hinges on where you're placed in the Sultanate.
Hope that helps. |

I know people here who have been renting cars for years, crazy to my way of thinking. Complete dead money! The first thing I did after passing my three-month probihition was to start looking for a car and, like you said, you can pick up a perfectly decent vehicle for under 2500 OMR and, yes, definitely try and buy from an expat. Moreover, jeeps, land rovers etc. maintain their value quite well as long as you maintain them and maintenace here is cheap. Certainly, when I leave, it will be nice to pocket the extra couple of thousand from the sale. I know quite a few people who are renting cars for around 100 OMR or under, but it's completely off the books and illegal. |

This reminds me...I understand that the big hotels in Salalah have gyms that expats can join. Can anyone tell me how much they cost? |

The Crown Plaza is the most popular since it's centrally located and that's the one teachers usually join.
A single annual membership is RO 220.
They've deals for couples where you'll each pay RO 90 for 180. Many teachers get a "spouse" and sign up for this deal... |

Thanks. I am hoping to live nearby. Are there any particular apartment complexes near the Crowne Plaza that I should look for? (Suitable for a single person on a teacher's salary).

When you arrive in Salalah, look for places in Dahariz. There are a few buildings in the area with 10 month rents that cost under 180, from what I've heard. |
