So, got a job offer, money looks good. They explain that they can't let me get a Z visa from my home country... I have to go there first and use their special agency to get a z visa. They will send all my paperwork (including my original passport) and then get a letter for me? And then I have to take a train for an interview in Beijing? What the heck is that about? Should I just straight up e-mail and ask if that means their company doesn't get visas because they aren't authorized and if they are using an illegal visa source? After traveling to Beijing, I'm supposed to go back out of the country to Hong Kong to complete the temp Z process or something... it just seems much more complicated than it needs to be...

I guess it's just the only decent-money offer I've gotten (peeps only want to give out 8K salaries this year or something... meanwhile I'm aiming for 13K+) so I guess I just want it to be legit. arg!

Never heard of a legit employer who can't get you a Z visa in your home country. This alone makes it look like they're manipulative.

Sounds like they want to cover their a**es by making sure you're not one of us typical psychos. If they don't like you they've risked nothing and you're in the MK with 30 days to find another job.
Me? I'd take a pass; but if you're interested in the offer and don't mind the risk of being marooned...........

Just to keep them honest, you might ask:

- what do you tell the consulate when you apply for a visa? "School XYZ told me to get an L and they would handle it."?
- what happens if you don't pass the interview. You're in Beijing on a tourist visa with no job. Do they reimburse flight? (That's a joke, Son.)
- what is the name, address, and business license number of their 'special agency'? Tell them you just want to follow the law by ensuring it's legit.
- who is paying for the trip to Beijing and your expenses (hotel, food, taxis,...)?

aahhh, too much to get into. Smells like a duck to me.

EDIT: This sounds odd.
"They will send all my paperwork (including my original passport) and then get a letter for me?"
They don't need your passport to get an invitation letter, you need it to get the visa AFTER they get the letter.

Red Flags!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they can't get you the correct visa up front, look elsewhere.

Haha! I read this with the voice of Foghorn Leghorn in mind.

I concur with JamesD and mike w. The "employer" should be able to send the proper paperwork to you in your home country that you then take with your passport and money to the Chinese embassy/consulate in home country to get the 30-day entry visa. This gets you to China.

Once you are in China, you take passport and more paperwork (e.g. paper from local police station verifying your place of residence in the PRC) to the PSB in your Chinese locale. From them you can get the one-year (roughly) residence permit which allows you to live and work in China--at this point there isn't any "have to leave China" procedure. You simply sit tight in China and continue with your work while the PSB processes your residence permit. As a matter of fact, you may not be able to leave China, because you won't have your passport while the residence permit is being processed.

It might take some time but bam! you report back to the PSB in a few weeks, pay some money, and then get your passport back with the newly minted residence permit.

Getting to China and getting legal permission to work in the PRC should not deviate from this course.

This does sound sketchy. Personally, I would give this a miss; otherwise, we may hear the voice of Bugs Bunny saying: "what a maroon!"

Warm regards,

Thanks for the input! Yeah, it was red-flagging at me, but I needed a second opinion. I'm so tired of trying to weed through all these scams and the low-pay/agent takes half the salary/etc. I just want a decent position arrrrg >.< *so frustrated*

Even if this "special agency" is legit (which I highly doubt that it is; haha, "special agency", that in itself is a sketchy moniker), this sounds like a side business of theirs in which they can extract even more fees from applicants. Forget that.

Warm regards,

It is tiresome; nonetheless, keep the patience and keep the faith. Going the extra mile (or in China--the extra two or three or seventeen miles--haha!) to get something legit that works for you will pay off in the end and you'll be thankful that you did this instead of getting sucked into the Scam Central Inferno.

Warm regards,

Oh yes!

I've also met a few of his brothers, some of his uncles, and several of his cousins as well!

鬼豆 has quite the extensive family located ALL over Our China!

They can get you a bulk shipment of Cavin Klean underwear, some Luis Mutton handbags, and a whole truckload of Lesscafe products.

Very Happy

Haha! I love the characters for his name: 鬼豆 = devil/spirit/ghost bean.

If they are serious about you, ask them to pay for your flight there upfront and ask them for an advance on the first months salary plus travel expenses. Won't happen, but why should you carry all of the risk?

I always hated it when Mom nagged me about wearing Klean underwear. Rides up on me.
