Hi guys,

I just had an hour long interview with the University of Tabuk.

Does anyone have any information on them?

Where is Tabuk situated? The interviewer said the closest big city is Medina. He said it has its own airport for regional flights which includes Dubai. It is not far from Jordan.

If i am successfull as I have a bachelors degree they cannot offer me the visa direct with the University. They only have visas for phd holders. So the visa would be with another company. You still get the benefits of the 2 months holidays as a direct hire.

I am not sure what the pay will be like anyone have any ideas? I have 2 years teaching experience in the UK with a BA Law degree and I am completing my CELTA.

In terms of accomodation he did say you get an allowance or compund provided accomodation.

So far I have been made an offer by ICEAT to work in KSU Riyadh or Education Experts. I wonder if this is a better option?

Any thoughts would be kindly appreciated.

Nabz.

Unfortunately, your unrelated degree + minimal years of experience will only net you offers from companies like EdEx, ICEAT and the rest of the batch. You didn't mention which contracting company you would work for if you took the Tabuk position, but I strongly suggest you research that company as well as ICEAT and EdEx before making any decisions. You may find none are the best option.

Tabuk is in the North...somewhere...not too far from the Jordanian border. There should be tons of information on Tabuk. I didn't know they do direct hires. I know Al Khaleej used to source teachers out to Tabuk and I'm not sure if they still do it. I doubt the teachers were anything more than BA + CELTA holders. However, it is uncommon for a university to hire BA + CELTA holders directly. I have seen cases, but these cases are very much in the minority. I reckon they will offer you something between 10,000 - 12,000 SAR. Unless the university has a really dire reputation, always go for the direct hire. EDEX and ICEAT...not too sure about them...at least with Al Khaleej they don't mess around with Iqamas and pay.

I don't know about the Univ. there but the area looks ok to me.

After turning down an AF base job there with an American Corp. (50K usd/yr) - I got a little curious.

The conclusion I came to was that it's a decent back-up to have.

Wish you well in negotiating a decent salary + package.

erm... to get to the interview stage without knowing about the place you're going to work at nor where it is seems a tad naive to me.

Be warned that you can get seriously burned by not doing your research prior to coming to Saudi. Perhaps this post was a belated realisation of just that. I hope so.

An unrelated BA + zero experience (post-CELTA) equals zero salary negotiations, especially if the employer is a contracting company.

That's part of being younger. One has to pay their dues and get less salary. One “angry” young man wrote in a non-related post today that old people who teach at gov't universities don't complain about anything because they have nowhere to go. “Grandpa is trapped. Quick, call the nursing home!” Well, maybe we are (I’m in my 40’s, BTW) not complaining as much because of our experience and we’re getting paid more money. Money can solve many things and make smaller problem (like a hard mattress) not seem that big of a deal. Younger people want to fight for every little thing because they feel some false sense of entitlement; like they are owed something, but can’t really back it up.

I rest a thick stack of 500sr bills on my forehead anytime I get cranky - like now. Cool

Dear The ANgry Brit and Icanupp1954,

I'd say you're BOTH guilty of overgeneralizing:

"People don't complain on this site about KFUPM because most teachers are old and stuck with nowhere to go. They accept the low pay and lots of holidays believing they've lucked out."

"Younger people want to fight for every little thing . . ."

Of course, I could be wrong. Both of you may be able to discern the motivations and describe the actions of entire classes of people. If so, I believe you could find a much more lucrative field of employment than EFL. Very Happy

Regards,
John

John, I thought "overgeneralizing" was a Bush-ism, and I was looking forward to giving you hell for it… until I looked it up. Sackcloth and ashes have since been donned! Embarassed

Dear grahamb,

As a general rule, I generally eschew overgeneralization. Very Happy

I 100% agree John.

I sit in my apt. alone (boo-hoo) after "work" and I sometime feel bored (spew). I sometimes lay on my very soft and comfortable mattress that I bought with my own money (private joke) and write on my laptop. The need to post, at times, worthless comments (spew) to complete strangers (spew) is somehow cathartic and it helps me find something to do during my time here (cathartic spew). If one would take the time to collectivity read all of my 240 plus postings, they would see a pattern of self-deprecating humor along with other patterns ranging from downright silly to being just plain stupid. I don't take myself seriously, why should a complete stranger take any of my hollow words to heart? I guess this is the one compensation I ask for due to some the postings I have made in the past on this site that was written to help strangers that ask sincere, intelligent questions, or those that seek general advice.

Sincerely,
Guilty as Charged

Dear icanupp1964,

I must admit I was very surprised since your posts are usually very helpful and sometimes hilariously funny.

So, I guess you're allowed. Very Happy

Just don't let it happen again!

Regards,
John

John, I try hard every day not to be a smart ass. I honestly do. But... Evil or Very Mad sometimes the dark side of the force takes over, or I read SO MUCH BS, I get overcome with wanting to dish it out right back to the other smart ass.

Where's that stack of 500sr bills I keep in the freezer? I need to press them hard against my forehead again to get rig of another case of crankiness. Rolling Eyes

This university interviews(A Briton does the interviews) a great many candidates. Then numerous employment offers are made and accepted. At that point, nothing happens. The university(i.e., interviewer) fails to aid the applicant in obtaining a work visa and emails from the 'hired' teachers are typically ignored.
