I have taught high school classes until this month. Now they want to farm us out to middle schools. The contract specifically has high school on it.

I am not adverse to middle school teaching, but the commute is 40 minutes now and I would have taken a different job.

Does a school have the right to change teacher's locations like this? What can a teacher do if the school refuses to give a release letter besides leaving the country?

The right? Dunno. Can they do it? Yes.

who is "they"? recruiter and/or agency?

you could fight it, show 'em the contract and demand your rights.
probably wouldn't work, and will cause more problems in the near
future. (not distant future, as you will have none with them)

how about agree to the change, with a corresponding increase in
pay and/or days off? gotta be paid for travel time.

it's time to negotiate.

If you used a recruiter to get the job, contact the recruiter. The recruiter has a contract with the school, and a breach of your contract constitutes a breach of the recruiter's contract. I had an employer who pulled shenanigans. I called my recruiter who, in turn, who called the FAO and straightened her out.

I don't know if your recruiter can or will help, but it's worth a try.

Good luck.

Whatever you do, be polite, firm, smile, and never discuss money with your employer (e.g., raise {which you are rightfully owed if there is an increase in travel time, etc.}) in the presence of others. You might have to take a bit of it with a fistful of salt (not a pinch).

could be 'adverse.' maybe he's a truly lousy primary school teacher with
disastrous consequences for the chillin's education, yet with no pernicious
effects when teaching middle school.
