I saw this line posted by another elsewhere, I consider the paid summer an absolute must. Teachers all over the world get paid holidays - it's part of the gig. I am at a loss as to why anyone working in China for more than 1 year would accept anything less. Accepting less gives the impression that it is ok to offer disrespectful salaries to FTs in general

This assumes you're working for the same school from year to year right? This is my first year and I plan to switch unis next semester, so I figured I won't be seeing any summer pay. I shouldn't expect my new school to pay me during the break right?

There can also be perks that make up for the lack of summer pay. At my current position, I receive airfare reimbursement in addition to travel allowance every term.

I contract for a certain amount for a year and then divide the payments in to 12 months....no beanies or flights home.. just hard cold cash....almost 90 days of vacation .... just for the breaks .......

first contract in kunming paid spring break. no paid summer, even if
returning. in fact, ft's were required to leave the "campus hotel" and
put things in storage (not provided by the school!) somewhere.....

i didn't return.

current tropical college offers paid spring break, paid summer if returning.
can stay in housing (utilities still paid) over summer. school made the
apartment available immediately after the end of the spring semester
in kunming.

both semesters this year have been 12 hours per week, 3 days per week.
also have choice of flight reimbursement or fixed allowance, and choice
of picc insurance or fixed allowance. they are also giving me bonuses and
will occasionally pay for a 2-3 day vacation somewhere in hainan.

maybe will change a few more things....fao asked me to help edit/revise
the contract now that schools are no longer required to use safea contracts.
(at least in hainan........YKMMV)

Henan Business College in Zhengzhou didn't pay for the summer AND foreign teachers had to vacate their apartments or pay rent during the summer AND half pay for spring. I can't say enough bad about that place. I lasted four months.

I recommend not taking offense at contract offers. Add up all salary, bonuses, reimbursements, etc. Then subtract all costs associated with the job (i.e: true airfare, necessary travel expenses, estimated utilities, rent and any others you can think of). Divide by 12. That's your monthly take if you want to go by calendar year. More importantly, it makes it easier to compare jobs compensation, a major consideration for many or most.

In public schools in the U.S. teachers aren't paid for summers unless they're actually working. They can opt for pay checks to collect their pay during the 9 1/2 months that they are in the class room, or they may opt for their pay check to be stretched to be paid out over the course of the entire year.

This is why many school districts are pushing for 12 month school years: more pay.
