ILO commends Saudi Arabia’s labor policies

The International Labor Organization (ILO) has praised the Saudi government's labor policies, particularly its plans to reduce youth unemployment and increase the participation of women in the economy.

ILO Director General Guy Ryder, who was in Riyadh this week to hold discussions with businesspeople and public officials, also commended the Kingdom for its laws to protect expatriate workers. He welcomed the drive to ensure the private sector employs more Saudis.

He said the ILO plays an important role in fighting poverty and injustice, and providing protection for workers worldwide.
Ryder met with several businesspeople at the Council of Saudi Chambers (CSC) this week. Nada Al-Nashif, ILO regional director, Ahmad Al-Humaidan, undersecretary for labor affairs, Fahad Al-Rabiah, CSC vice chairman, Mansour Al-Shathry, chairman of the CSC labor committee, Lama Al-Sulaiman, a member of the labor committee, and Saud Al-Meshary attended the meeting.

In his opening speech, Al-Rabiah said the government was playing a key role by introducing laws to ensure Saudis have jobs and improving education and training to prepare them for the labor market.

He said businesspeople in the region would have to create more joint ventures to help overcome economic challenges.

Al-Shathry briefed Ryder on laws governing the recruitment of Saudi women, which includes granting them the right to health care during maternity leave, and making sure they do not work in hazardous environments or late hours. He said the Kingdom was committed to ensuring fair treatment for its expatriate workers.
