Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question....
I've got seven years of lessons sorted in folders depending on what level I taught in oz and New Zealand.
The question is how much paper are expat teachers taking with them when working around Asia? Or have you fined tuned it to a few fav books and USB files? I'm nervous to chuck things out that taken years to compile.... |

You need not chuck anything. Buy a USB or two and start scanning. Save your work on two USBs and your computers, or any backup system you prefer. Definitely backup on computers if you're using local Chinese USBs.
You obviously have a great deal of work in those folders, so save it.

If the papers are flat, you can even take them outside in bright sunlight and photograph them and save them as .jpg's and save to a thumb drive.
All of my self-made lessons are saved digitally, and all of the stuff from books are copied as well. |

Scanning pages? Do you guys hand write your lesson material?
OP: How much stuff do you have exactly? I have quite a bit myself but I can fit it into a small box or a sports bag when I need to move. It's not so much of a hassle.
Of course it's a different story if you plan to take the stuff with you from your home country. You can't take much on a plane so just print it out when you get here. |

Some folks bring paper textbooks and work books from home and copy them in China. |

I've had three USBs break in two weeks. Back hem up on external hard drives or clouds. |

I've dropped Chinese-made (or, at least, bought in China) USB flash dives only to see the case shatter. I have a Chinese Hisense brand USB that has a stainless steel cover that is still going strong. I've also had the USB connection wear out on a decent Kingston.
You have to be careful with them. |

I wouldn't inflict that kinda treatment on a poor innocent USB. |

That made me laugh and I needed it so thanks.
USBs do die though, so keep your stuff backed up. I have one USB that works in some of my classrooms and another that works for the others. |

I've scanned or digitized most of my stuff, keep a backup of all of it on Dropbox and my computer, and have some USB drives (with write-protection switches…very important) that contain materials by theme.
Then all that's left to move is the realia and other materials, which is manageable enough. |
