Hi all,

Perhaps someone might have some feedback on this matter.

I am currently looking at the possibility of going over to Japan to teach later in the year. As I am over 30, I would have to get visa sponsorship as opposed to the working holiday visa.

Going to Japan was something I was considering about 4 years ago and I secured a position with a well known teaching recruitment organisation. It's one of those companies that source people for public schools but only tell you the location about 3 weeks prior to the commencement of the position. Anyway, the upshot is that when they offered me the position, I wasn't that happy with the location and a number of other issues, so I declined the position, all very amicable.

The company had applied for a visa for me. It was probably the working holiday visa as I was under 30. I presume so, but I can't quite remember. Anyway, I received the Certificate of Eligibility which I would have had to exchange for the visa at the Japanese embassy in Ireland (I'm Irish). But obviously it didn't come to that.

Anyway, my question is 'Do you think I would have any issues when applying for a visa this time, given that I have been granted a visa in the past'?

Any feedback would be helpful.

Thank you!!!! Wink

I've never heard of a company applying for a working holiday visa for someone. I'm not sure if it's even possible; usually, individuals apply for WH visas so that they can come over and look for work (which is supposed to be less than full-time under a WH visa). The company probably filed for either an instructor visa (which are used for working for local public school systems) or a specialist in humanities visa (which are used for eikaiwa teachers) -- I'm not sure which the dispatch companies use.

I would seriously doubt that you would have any issues. You were never issued the visa. I'm sure that (backing out as you did) is something that happens all the time.

Thanks RTM,

Right, well it would have been an instructor visa then as it was with a dispatch company for public schools.

This time round I would be looking at eikawas (and thus a humanities visa) as I think they would suit me better.

Perhaps I am over-thinking the possibility of visa complications. A few months back I read a job advertisement somewhere asking applicants to specify if they have been granted a visa before and I think that's what has planted the seed in my head.

But any other feedback from other posters would be much appreciated, too.

Yes, you probably are, understandably, overthinking it. So long as you haven't done anything wrong i.e overstaying/criminal offences etc, there is no reason you should be denied a visa. You can apply for and get or refuse a visa as many times as you need I think. And as was pointed out you didn't even get the visa before, just a C of E, which is just a background check done in Japan. It should be fine.
