Hey does anyone have any thoughts on Chongqing City?

It has a population of 30 million from what I've read. That sounds ridiculous.

Chinese municipalities cover large areas. This is why the stated population figure doesn't seem to be aligned to say the downtown.
When I lived in Dalian a small town I visited regularly and which was 3 hours by non express train, was still regarded as 'belonging' to Dalian.

As someone said the population of the actual city vs. the population of the entire city district are poles apart.
In Korea people used to say to get a feel of the real size drop a zero from the quoted population number. Thus a million sized city could end up feeling like hicksville. Same here.
Chongqing is essentially considered its own province (a municipality??). Like Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. Cities *and* provinces. The real population of Chongqing city is "only" around 7 million or so. The provincial population is closer to 30 million - this would include rice farmers 2 hours drive from you.
Regardless of the size it's still a crowded, polluted, humid borderline shithole. Kind of the city equivalent of an Italian man's armpit.
Worth a visit. but to live.......?

My mate from Manchester said he spent a week or two there, and quite liked the city. Then again, he is from Manchester, so almost anything might seem good to him.

Try this: http://www.cqexpat.com

I have been to CQ. Seemed a little Bladerunnerish, huge and dark, sitting upon hills above the river. Can't so I was over-enamoured, but I was only there two days, and don't know about the expat or local lifestyles there.

I'm also considering CQ. Most of the posts I have come across on the net are pretty positive.

Hmm. The term 'borderline shithole' sounds like the old glass half-full/half-empty conundrum. Interesting choice of words. Can't tell if you like it or not. If you were anyone else, Listerman, I would assume you mean you don't care for Chongqing - but you go on to say that an Italian man's armpit is worth a visit - whatever could you mean??? An Italian's armpit is worth a visit, but you wouldn't want to live there... okay... Confused ( Very Happy )
