Does anyone know anything about the working conditions of English teachers at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Beppu?
A while back there were some negative things posted on another forum. These included a poor work/pay ratio and using the possibility of tenure to overwork their teachers.
Anyway, that was in 2007. I'd be curious to know if these claims were true, and if so, whether things have changed.
Thanks in advance for any insights you can share. |

No first-hand experience with APU myself, but the following threads might be worth reading:

There's also Debito's blacklist, which APU is on: http://www.debito.org/blacklist.html#apu
However, I don't put much weight on that blacklist as the information is often quite old and even minor things can get a university on the blacklist. |

I had an offer but turned then down. The salary was too low at 5 mil no bonus, plus I think 100000 for research can't remember if there was any relo there was a tiny bit extra for rent but it was something minimal like 10000 yen. the main problem was the teaching hours were really high can't remember how much but 18 classes it was a few years ago. But, the main problem with them was the holidays, basically you are paid a low salary, so you should get the full holidays but you only get a month for summer and a month for winter, you have to spend the other weeks on campus working. Other problem is there is nowhere to supplement your income as it's in a tiny city. |
