I work for a decent (qualify that however you like) public city vocational college and it's time to say good-bye. Actually, it's been a great job and a great experience and boy I've had years of 'interesting' experiences in TEFL, so coming from me that's a pretty good compliment.
Anyway my contract is that I'm to be paid through August, but most likely I'll be out of country from mid-July. My FAO said she could expedite August into July (double payment) but I will be gone by then anyway.
I have an ICBC account with a Union Pay card and was told by the bank I could withdraw money (daily limits though) overseas (Thailand I guess as I'm on the road to Mandalay, Myanmar). I can't imagine that my school would just say, 'no, he ain't here so we're not gonna pay,' but if something like that did happen, I guess I have no recourse other than complaining. It's not enough money I don't think to warrant getting a lawyer involved.
I do plan on returning to China (Yunnan) the spring term on a student visa.
I'm asking 1) just covering bases as I'm sure plenty of other teachers have been in this situation and 2) just to get reassurances that a public college in GZ would be very unlikely to break contract.
Thanks. |

If nothing has suggested otherwise to you, I would be inclined to trust the college. If you haven't had any problems with them in the past, and neither have the other FTs, I see no reason to suspect they would start now.
If it doesn't work out, name and shame. |

I have no reason at all to distrust the school. They've never been late and I've even received surprise bonuses- all good stuff. But I just wanted to hear others' experiences and reassurances like yours. But- if something did go wrong nothing you can do right? Oh well and all that. We're all disappointed at some time or another.
When you're on the move, you need to count your cash and count on your cash.
I guess I also brought it up as I know there are people working at private schools and maybe they have tales of caution to share. |

I have always been paid no problem staying or not.
If I was worried, I wouldn't let them know that I was leaving the country. I would just tell them I would be travelling around the country. |

out of curiosity......
how long have you been with the school? will you be getting
severance pay?
have you been paying into the social welfare scheme? if so,
have you been given any guidance on how to claim your
portion of the taxes/contributions? |
