I am a new graduate of teachers college in Canada and need some info about teaching abroad. I'm specifically interested the best way to get a job. Should I go through an agency or apply to private schools specifically. If through agencies what are two or three agencies you would recommend? Right now I am with teachanywhere.com does anyone have any experience with them? |

What "teachers college" would that be?
It is a big planet. What corner would you like to start in?
note that:
- Most of western Europe is not an option due to visa issues.
- Asia is the easiest market to get into but without a couple of years of home country experience you won't be getting into "international" schools (most require home country licensure AND 2+ years of experience (due to their accreditation requirements).
- - whether to use a recruiter or not depends on the country (s) you are looking at and what you want to do (EFL, subjects, ages, etc).
- Central and South America are close, easy to get into and paperwork is minimal. Most jobs are found "on the ground".
Do you want to teach primary, secondary (subject teacher) or EFL?
Help us out here a bit.

thank you for your reply,
I went to school in Ontario. I am a certified teacher. I have 2 years of experience but not paid. I am qualified to teach secondary (high school). Have you taught abroad before? if so where did you look? I am interested in asia and the middle east |

Certified by the Ontario College of Teachers but no real classroom time (you have never done it for a living).
What are you certified to teach?
Do you have any EFL/ESL qualifications?
IF you want to teach EFL then use a recruiter and go to Korea, Vietnam or China.
There are openings in Japan (JET program) if Japan suits your interests.
Without that 2 years of home country experience (employed as a teacher) you won't be getting into programs like NET (Hong Kong) or public schools in Taiwan.
Thailand is an option for tier 2 or tier 3 international schools but you won't be paying off any student loans while you are working there (remuneration packages are too low and you don't qualify for tier 1 schools).
For international school jobs you should be looking at things like:
http://www.searchassociates.com/
http://www.ibo.org (apply to schools directly via their websites - DO NOT apply to the IBO).
http://www.tes.co.uk/jobs - pick a corner of the planet and start applying.
http://www.internationalschoolsreview.com/
IF you are primarily interested in teaching EFL then it is even more country specific.
I CANNOT help you with the middle east. I know virtually nothing about working there other than the simple fact that I would not (in spite of the money to be made).
And I have taught in Japan, China, the Philippines, Korea and Thailand.
I currently work as a school administrator after 16 years in the classroom and a couple of masters degrees.
edit: corrections of URL for search associates.

Since the ESL Cafe focuses on teaching ESOL and not content, you'll get more relevant responses on a site like International Schools Review. Similarly, do an Internet search on international schools jobs forums. |

Good advice from stephanburi. I used Search Associates once and they were excellent.
One thing, though; you WILL be able to apply for HK NET scheme jobs, but only if you are willing to teach primary instead of secondary (secondary schools require one year's full-time experience whereas primary schools do not).
Good luck. With a teaching degree, you have quite a few options.
Edit: forgot to mention - you'll need a TEFL of 100 hours plus 20 hours' supervised teaching. Can do through I-to-I, I think. |
