Hi all,
I am from the U.S. and graduating with a BA in English next year. I plan to teach abroad somewhere, but this post is primarily about my girlfriend. She is from Argentina, already graduated and has been teaching English to elementary students for 1 semester.
We would like to go somewhere we could both find teaching jobs, preferably somewhere in Asia. She is fluent in English and spent a year in the U.S. on a Fulbright scholarship as a student-teacher. Obviously if there was a need for a Spanish teacher she could do that as well.
Appreciate any suggestions/feedback. |

If she holds an Argentinian passport then the lucrative EFL markets like Korea are not open. She cannot get a visa.
China is an option but she will get paid less because of her passport.
It is pretty much the same with the rest of the ASEAN block (Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc). Work and visa are possible but she will be paid less since she is a "non-native-speaker".
She will also need to prove her proficiency as an English speaker in many countries (visa requirement) by having a valid TOEIC/IELTS/TOEFL certificate.

Ditto Suphanburi's comments. Regardless of the country, in general, non-native English speakers get paid less than native speakers. How much less is a wild guess. She'd have to first apply to see if she even gets a nibble from employers. Hopefully, her degree (in a major related to English?) plus her English teaching experience will help her land interviews. |

On average, 1/2 what a native speaker would earn doing the same job.
If she holds licensure as a teacher (from anywhere) and experience in a legitimate classroom setting (K-12) in the States then she may get a bit more in a K-12 setting in Asia).
It won't likely make any difference if she end up working in a language center. She'll get 1/2 what a native speaker makes. (exception: if she is pretty and white and can be passed off as an American even though she has the wrong passport she may be able to negotiate a bit more).
