- 55 years old
- MSc and Bsc(Hons) in Electronics & IT from a long time ago (London University)
- TEFL certificate (120 hours in-class)
- 10 years off/on experience teaching EFL and Homeroom in Asia, also educational management.
I want to continue to teach EFL, Primary Homeroom or Secondary Maths/Science or for another 10 years, but my concern is that my lack of teaching qualifications may cause me some employment problems (no job!) in the future.
If possible, I would like to continue teaching at the primary age level, but that's not an absolute.
IYHO, what additional teaching qualification(s) or CPD courses would help me to secure/retain a 'hands-on' teaching job in Asia in my advanced years?
M.Ed?
B.Ed?
PGCEi (I already have an offer from Nottingham University)
??Some other qualification???

Perhaps the CELTA Young Learners would be a qualification to go for if you want to keep teaching children?
You could get a job in Asia with your current qualifications at an 'international' school. Though maybe not EFL but subject specific e.g. IT / engineering. |

The CELTA YL Extension looks interesting, but it requires a CELTA qualification to enroll. I have a TEFL, but not a CELTA

As per my OP, I have already been teaching EFL for 10 years in south-east Asia, including so-called, international schools, (which means they are really bilingual/EP schools). I rarely teach IT/Engineering. |

If you want to stay in Asia then you are good to go.
Your age is a factor at this point so you will need to bang on doors (*be in the country) when you are applying.
(NOTABLE EXCEPTIONS: China and Korea - in both of which your age is a factor in visa issuance).
In the ASEAN block (with the exception of Indonesia) you are good to go as you are and more qualifications won't help or result in a substantial return on your time and money.

Ah, I thought you meant you wanted to get a job in Asia when you said 'secure/retain'. Your quals are fine as they are, the biggest barrier will be your age.
If I were you I'd try and look for an employer that would be able and willing to keep you past 60 if you wanted to remain there for any period of time. |
