Hello. I was wondering, if I were to work in China on a work visa, and if I wanted to stay longer than a year, would I have to leave China and get another Z type visa? Or can I just renew my visa in China? Also, which are the best cities to teach in/visit in your spare time? Thanks.
Jared

Regardless of what people will tell you, and whether it's right or wrong I don't want to discuss, but the REALITY is, if you turn up with the right attitude, degree or no degree you can find a job that will pay ok, organize your Z visa and other paperwork and generally be ok. I'm not interested in hearing from all those stiffs who are now going to flame 'But the law ...yada yada yada.'
This is just the fact of the matter. doesn't matter whether we agree or not.

By under grad degree I'm a mechanical engineer with a PE license in three US states. The BEST engineer I ever met had no degree, no license yet he taught me a great deal about science.

The folks that want degrees more than anything would also have Jesus get a PhD in divinty, Buddha study philosophy and Mohammed attend a middle eastern uni to undergo research and classes in comparative religions.

"A divinty student named Fiddle
Refused his final degree.
He said, 'It's bad enough
Being Fiddle,
"Without being Fiddle D.D."

Some overkill in the thread's title: a WORK VISA i s a "z" type visa. There are no other work visas but 'Z' visas.

To answer your question: you can LEGALLY extend your visa for up to three months although it will then be a tourist visa. To do so, you have to be registered with the PSB - your employer must register you, or else, you check in at an approved hotel which wkill pass your registration slip to the local PSB - then you can apply for an extension in person. It costs little, is fraught with some uncertainty (the only certainty you have is that they will extend your visa if you can make it plausible to them that you are going to leave China within a reasonable time fgrame!). Sometimes they grant you one month, 2 months - so you can tour China and exit by one of its border checkpoints.

I decided to pull my first post, because it had the unintended consequence of suggesting to some readers that I felt you can't be a teacher or can't be a good teacher without special qualifications- something I've never stated, nor knowingly implied, on this forum. (Sometime, I'll take the time to put down my thoughts regarding this question, but not now.)

My first post also had the unintended consequence of suggesting to some that I thought you can't get a Z visa (or Residence Permit for Foreigners) if you don't have a university degree. As to this second question, I have no opinion, as I haven't had, nor has anyone I know had experience with it- experience that is, that goes beyond what I can read in the Chinese Law, and official, Chinese websites. Cujobytes suggests that he knows of cases in which a person without a university degree has been provided official permission to teach in China, if I understood his post properly.

My initial response to Jared's post was, in part, the result of previous inquiries that he's made to this forum, inquiring whether we now use more, or less, toilet paper, than before. Perhaps some of you would now like to answer that question for him. Seems to me we never quite got around to it, last time he posted here.

Well I suppose we should answer the TP question just to set him straight. In China we use less because this is China and the stuff simply isn't available except in 5 star hotels. It's perfectly acceptable to use your finger, and that's what we have to do. So, jared, if you do come you might want to bring along a good supply of your own.

What have you said that has allowed you to stay so long?
