If the plan is to stay in Japan for many years and you are initially on a sponsored work visa, will you always have to be on a sponsored visa from then on, or can you eventually renew without a sponsor? I am ignoring the possibility of marriage and changing your visa type in any other ways. Thank you anyone that gives input.

After your initial sponsored work visa, you can do a "self-sponsored" visa -- basically, you fill out all the visa paperwork yourself, and you list any employer you have (part or full-time) as your main employer. More info here and here. I believe self-sponsorship can lead to permanent residency at some point.

Thanks for the links, that is a relief that it is possible to self-sponsor. I was worried I would forever be limited to companies that sponsor visas, which would greatly limit potential jobs. Good to know!
