I was offered a job with no phone interview and no reference checks. This seems a little odd to me.. or is this normal in Mexico?

Not odd if one of your relatives is director of the school!

I wouldn't worry about it, they are obviously overwhelmed by your resume, or desperately looking for a teacher.

It's quite normal for language schools to hire somebody based on their application, if you are crap they can always fire you after a month.

Or . . . if somebody else shows up before you get there and takes the job you were hired for, you might not even get that first month to prove your stuff. Also, I know of a number of foreign teachers, myself included, who've had the experience of being offered a job which disappeared somewhere between the time of being hired and the starting date of the job.

It's not the norm for a school to hire you and then not have a job for you when you arrive. However, it's not unheard of in this country to find that what a person says he's going to do (in this case, employ you) on some date in the future and what he actually does when that future date arrives are two different things.
