The Nebuta festival is the one with the parade of illuminated paper mache floats. I hear that getting there is time consuming and accommodation difficult to book. That said, it may be worth it.
Has anyone here on Dave's been to this festival?
BTW, it's held in the first week of August. |

I have. I remember it being a bit underwhelming, but the weather in Aomori in August is refreshingly cool. |

I've been there three times and I really enjoyed it. The lighted floats in the parade are great and there is a lot to do during the day. It is a very festive atmosphere. There are also other sites to see in the region like Lake Towada which has a lot of moderately priced onsens. There is also the Hirosaki which is a castle town with a nice park and beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring. If you go, you may want to book early as the rooms can get expensive in Aomori. And, if you like the Tohoku region, don't forget to go to the snow festival in Sapporo in late January or early February.
Enjoy |
