|
|
Hi all,
I'm a recent graduate with a 120 hour combined TEFL course. I want to teach beginning mid/late August or early September. As of now I have options to teach in Korea, but figured I would look into Japan some more.
I know I probably can't get into public programs such as JET, but what are private schools like in Japan? How hard are they to get into? What is the pay/benefits like in comparison to Korea privates?
Also, what are some good recruiters for privates?
Thanks! |

The deadline for JET is around November/December for a start in the following July/August. So, for starting this August, you have missed the boat for JET (i.e., it's not just a matter of not getting into it, your timing is off).

Just a clarification: I'm assuming you are asking about private language "schools", i.e., companies that offer after-school and weekend classes for adults and children (hagwon in Korea, eikaiwa in Japan).
People usually use the term "privates" to mean "private lessons" -- i.e., one-to-one lessons that you arrange independently outside of your normal work, for which you get paid in cash directly by the student.
In terms of "how hard they are to get into, it can vary a lot. Some people spend years unsuccessfully trying to get an offer. Others do it within a few weeks. Many places nowadays prefer people who are already in Japan and already have a visa. If you are applying from outside of Japan, applying to the big chain companies is one route (e.g., Aeon, ECC, Peppy Kids Club, Nova/Jibun Mirai). Check ads online for salaries. It seems that between 220,000-250,000 yen/mo is average nowadays. Reputable places should cover 1/2 of your health insurance, and give you about 10 days off per year. Housing and flights are not often included. Some companies require you to live in company-owned/leased housing, which they may or may not over-charge you for.
I don't think recruiters are used much in Japan.
Didn't you ask a lot of these same questions once before? |
