Yeah. Post specific questions. Where are you now? What do you already know? Anyone that posts a 1 line question on such a broad topic either can't be serious or wants others to do their basic research. |

Hi DaveJavu
Thanks for the prompt reply. Yeh I know my first posting was a little thin on the ground, however, I can tell u that i am serious for sure. Just a little about myself first: I am knocking on the door of nearly 50 years old and do not really want to start from scratch as a class teacher all over again. So I am interested in market that can provide me with solid business opportunities, as opposed to working for someone else for the rest of my life.
I am a qualified ELT teacher (about 6 yrs experience)who also spent a further 10 yrs in ELT publishing. I lived in Indonesia for 7 years but do not want to return to the present political and economic climate existing there. I would like to return to South-east Asia, but to somewhere up and coming rather than somewhere overcooked. From what i have researched myself, Vietnam fits the bill.
I understand that if i come to Vietnam, i may have to initially teach for somebody else until i get to know my way around. However, a longer term aim would be to set up or buy into my own business (something i would want to do fairly quickly as i have funds available to invest). So I am interested in knowing if that possibility exists or whether local legislation makes it extremely difficult or impossible for foreigners to do so. In addition, I would be very interested in hearing from anybody who has an EFL business partly or wholely for sale.
Hope this clarifies things a bit.
Cheers,
Ashok |

[b]Hello everyone,
I am heading to HCM at the end of this July 31 or August the 1st for one week. Is there anyone out there interested going on either of this date? You can stay at my house in HCM instead of at a hotel. Your choice. :D [li[/list] |

Does anyone know what it takes to start a simple language school? Do you have to be married to a Vietnamese? Or can any foreigner just start a school whenever they wish? |

Hello Bart,
As far as I know all foreigners with money can open a school there but they are not allow to own land. I am not quite sure the status of a foreigner married a local there and run the business. I assume everthing will go to your wife if you married them I heard this from my sister in Vietnam. |

Hi Jojoni
I could be in Vietnam by the middle of August. I do not know if that is useful to you with regards to a possible meeting. However, there are one or two other things u could perhaps answer before we get that far. Would I be rite in assuming that u have got Vietnamese citizenship, your own property in HCMC which could be used for giving classes, and can speak and write fluent Vietnamese. Sorry about the punctation or lack of it but I am using a dual English and Arabic keyboard and they seem to have got a few things mixed up!
Best regards

Hello Ashok,
I do not have a Vietnamese citizenship. I am Chinese-Vietnamese born American citizen. According to the local law no foreigners are allowed to own property in Vietnam. I consulted with the housing authority when I was there only renting is allowed.
My sister owns the house and the construction will be completely finished in mid August of this year. THe house is located in District 1. Da Kao area. The length of the house is long, and the width is narrow. If you are thinking of a big place then it is not for you. Parking lot will be a major problem because this is a business area, not a residential area. I am not that good at writing in Vietnamese, but I am sure I can read it.
I am looking for someone who is either:
1 to rent the first and second floor of the house.
2. who has strong financial to go into the business with me.
3. What is your nationality? |

Right now I am in Korea until the end of this year to finish my contract. I am really want to open a small school. I have been teaching English in Korea for seven years now. And I must say I am tired of working for people. Especially too much emphasis on the ethnic of the teacher. How about you? |

Hi Jojoni
I will give u the bad news first - I'm English! Hope it wasn't too hard to swallow! My username is of Indian origin - I liked it so much when I came across it while visiting India, that I decided to use it for forums like this. With regard to your other questions I can tell u that financially I am in a position to be able to set up my own school, but naturally would not want to start off with anything too big. Other information that u mite or mite not want to know is that I am male, fiftyish with extensive experience in both business (other people's) and EFL teaching.
Rgds

Hi Ashok,
Gender preference, age and nationality ha never been an issue with me. Experience, responsibility, good manner and honesty are what I honestly want in the person. I myself thirty-nine years old, female.
In your previous post you mentioned that you could come to Vietnam in mid of August this year of course. I really want to me to meet you in person to discuss more about this and show you the house and its location too.
I will be in HCM from August 1st to the 8th. Is it possible for you to change your travelling date to Vietnam?
Are you currently in England or still in India? Just curious. |

Hi Jojoni
Rite now I am in Morocco investigating the property market. I came back to Europe (normally I use Spain as a base, England being too cold for my liking ) in May after spending the best part of the last 2 years in India studying how to meditate, how to give counselling sessions, taking a look at Eastern religions and philosophies etc. After doing all that I decided it was time to put some of it into practice as well as beginning to earn a living again. As a result I have been considering and researching various business possibilities over the last couple of months.
Like u I would want to do business with somebody who is both honest and competent, so I am glad that we appear to be on the same wavelength.
I will be tied up with various things until Aug 4, so there is a possibility I could be in Vietnam round about the 6th or 7th. Let me see if I can fix something up. Alternatively, if the latter is not practical I could always consider a trip to Korea.
Best regards
Ashok |
