I know in some countries people have private students or work part time in language centers. Is that possible in KSA? Does anyone have any experience doing this?

I imagine that is due to visa stipulations, is that right?

Well, let's just say that you can do private tuition, but DON'T advertise it. Lots of teachers do it all the time.

As for working part time after official work in a Language school or anywhere else, you cannot do that because of your Iqama/visa which states you cannot work for anyone apart from the company you were hired by.

Get the money first before you start the lessons. Saudis are late or non payers for many things.

2backets reminds me of the "Two Buckets" rule of the Magic Kingdom which states:

Wen you arrive in the Magic Kingdom, you will be given 2 buckets to fill… the first one is for all of your money and the second one is for all of the 'bad' and 'sad' things thrown at you. As soon as one of them is full, then it is time to leave! Laughing

I think there are other people, including myself, add a third bucket which is filled with good memories about the Magic Kingdom, not everything is black! Laughing

What not to do when teaching private students on the side...

Private tuition teachers detained following raids
By Rashid Hassan, Arab News | 10 June 2014
Source: http://www.arabnews.com/news/584366

RIYADH--Riyadh Police on Monday conducted a raid in which they arrested and detained three teachers of the International Indian School, Riyadh (IISR) while they were giving private tuition.
Acting on a tip off, the police raided the house of the IISR teachers and found them surrounded by students gathered for private tuition.

Eyewitnesses who requested anonymity said the names of the teachers detained during the raid include Mehboob Pasha from Karnataka, Mohammad Rifai from Tamil Nadu and Tauheed Ahmad Siddiquee from the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

They were taken to the Tarheel (deportation center) jail, they said. They added that the Riyadh Police has a list of teachers and the addresses of the venues where they take students for tuitions. The IISR principal was not available for comment. However, reliable sources told Arab News that an urgent meeting at the IISR was on and the school management was working on a plan of action. The sources also said that the school’s public relations officer has been asked to bail out the teachers from police custody. When Arab News contacted other community school managements, to inquire if their teachers had also been detained during raids, they replied in the negative.

Private tuition is illegal and punishable in the Kingdom.

You know what NS... in the years I was in KSA practically every British/USA teacher was doing private tuition. The students were usually from the higher echelon of KSA society and we had no problems at all. Everyone knew!

But, unfortunately the Indian School and similar will be targeted because of who and where the teachers are from. The disparity is so obvious.

I suspect that this might be quite a different tuition than most TEFLers do. What tends to happen in many schools is that the teachers don't really cover the curriculum in the classroom. The reason being that the classes are huge and out of control, added to the fact that the teacher pay is abysmally low.

Thus, teachers hold private classes of their own to limit things to those who actually want to learn and/or do test prep... and earn extra money. But it naturally reflects very bad on the teacher who is usually charging his/her own students to basically cover what should have been covered in class time.

All of the TEFLers I taught with who did private lessons never worked with their own students. In the UAE and Oman over the years, only a small minority of teachers did it. I limited mine to students where the Ministry came to me and asked me to do it for some of their employees with specific needs.

Reminds me of the old Kung Fu TV series.
