|
Hi, I recently got an offer for a university teaching job at SIE. Salary is 5000RMB/mth for max 16 teaching hours/week.
I got sent pics of the apartment and it looks modern and clean.
Would you recommend teaching in Shenyang? I made a thread previously about choosing a city to work in where easy access to nature and air quality was important. Does Shenyang meet these criteria? (I know pretty much all city air in China is bad but relatively speaking?)
Thanks! |

Hi Nano. I currently work at SIE.
To answer your questions:
Apartment: The 4th level apartments have new sofa's and flat screen TV's. All but 2 FT's aren't "allowed" to live in them because it will cause "hurt feeling" amongst the other FT's. If you get on the 2nd or 3rd level the furniture/TV is really in poor shape. I'm not on the 4th ......
Teaching in Shenyang overall, from my experience this past year, has been ok. SIE is located WAY WAY north of the city. Actually a few month's ago we became the last subway stop on the N/S line. Before that stop opened it was a 20 minutes taxi to the subway...
I've posted this information before... Shenyang was explained to me and I've seen this to be true... It's a lot of 1st generation city folks. Probably a little more crude around here (SIE) than in the southern parts of Shenyang.
General weather: The winter is very long and extremely windy. That kind of makes it unbearable at times. Pollution is choking at times especially around here (SIE) tons and tons of new construction.
The student's are awesome! You will be either contracted out to a high end #2 university here in Shenyang to teach Business English or you will stay at SIE and teach very low level Oral English. I've done both this past year.
Any other questions I will be happy to help or chat with you... |

No. Strong no. Beiling Park in the middle of the city has a very large and nice forest in the back, but other than that, a big NO.
But for the other stuff, I worked at SIE a few years ago, and it is a decent place for a China newbie. They take care of their teachers and are up-front. I have to disagree about the apartments, the 2nd and 3rd floor apartments were definitely nicer than any other free FT accommodation I've seen in China. I guess it could be different if someone trashed the furniture but it was good stuff when I was there.
Pay was a bit low for what they asked you to do IMO. It looks like standard Uni offer but they will make you teach a lot of different classes, and they don't pay you when you're on vacation unless you work. They did have 12k airfare comp tho which is awesome and more than most places. Also the woman "Crystal" who works there and is supposed to take care of foreigners can be lazy at times. Try to be nice to her or she won't help you with anything.

Beijing is a lot worse, as are several other Chinese cities I've visited. I'd say it's about average compared to other big Chinese cities. |

No worries about "have to disagree"... no worries at all. I'm here now and that's my experience. Maybe a few years back they weren't that bad... Cheers buddy.
Yeah, to the point about teaching many different subjects etc.... My current load is 5 different books and 9 different classes. 20 hours teaching each week.
However, I think the OP posted about a high school offer he is going to accept so this thread might be finished. |
